• Body of Wagon4 ft. by 10 ft.
• Must be able to carry 2,000 pounds.
• Oxen cost 55-65 per yoke
• Usually people used oxen because they were
  stronger
• There are many other wagons airline,wind wagon
  Thomas ,a simple wheel barrow, mormon handcarts

The Trail

• Reaching Independence Rock before July 4th meant
  they would make it trough the mountains before
  winter
• Most people walked the whole 2,000 miles
• They only traveled 1-2 mph, and only about 15
  miles per day
• The trip from Independence,MO,to Oregon took
  about 6 months
• They rarely drank water, since it was usually so
  muddy so that killed the animals so drank coffee

People/Clothing

• Familys best clothes were carefully stowed away
  and not taken out till they got to Oregon
• Men wear same clothes day after day
• Women also dress in wool.

Supplies

• Guns were used for hunting and protection
• 100 pounds of flour per adult, 70 pounds of
  bacon, 30 pounds of pilot bread
• Other foods and supplies bought in Independence
• Each family brought a trunk filled with matches,
  medicine, and a family bible

Dangers on the Trail

• Dangers on the trailbad weather,unsafe
  water,sickness, broken axle,and death
• Steep mountains were huge dangers
• Crossing rivers with wagons was difficult and
  dangerous and sometimes took 5 days
• hot,dry desert sand and rough land often led to
  lameness and sore feet for the oxen, they
  sometimes had to wear rawhide booties
• Many people died because of wagons wheels
  smashing them
• Cholera killed many emigrants in less than 24
  hours! No cure!
