From the 500s to the 1300s, Europe had some
tough times.
The time is called the Middle Ages or
Medieval period.
This time is in the middle between ANCIENT
times and MODERN times.

The Medieval period was a time of great threat
from outsiders.
Groups such as the Franks, Vikings and Arabs
invaded and caused problems for Europeans.

To protect themselves, Europeans created
FEUDALISM.
This system of organizing society had lords,
manors serfs.

In the Late Middle Ages, things began to change.
New technology led to more efficient work
production around the manor.
Increased trading led to curiosity about the
world.

The Catholic Church was a most powerful authority
during the Middle Ages.
In the Late Middle Ages, the CRUSADES began.

The Crusades were Holy Wars the Church fought to
protect spread the religion.
The Crusaders visited other lands and brought
back interesting things.
People realized that there was a cool world out
there.

Marco Polo went to China!
Merchants began to increase trade.
They sold their goods at markets or trade
fairs, which soon grew into cities.
These cities needed skilled workers.

Now, things were changing faster!
A Middle Class of workers developed!
A Money-based Economy grew!
The Feudal system was breaking down!
Europe had growing WEALTH!

This helped Monarchs gain power.
These governments and the Church began to need
educated workers.

Literature began to be translated into languages
for all to read.
The number of Universities increase.
Progress was happening!

The Renaissance!
Renaissance means rebirth in French.
Great creativity and exploration resulted from
The Renaissance.

As the Middle Ages gave way to the
Renaissance,Europeans began to explore the
larger world.

Columbuss voyage to the Americas led to a
reshaping of American, European, and African
history.
