Title: The students of EGL 102 section 008 would like to present the results of their research project.
1Welcome!
- The students of EGL 102 section 008 would like to
present the results of their research project. - Lets start with Defining the Problem
2Defining the Problem
- Whenever an Oakton student drops out before
earning a bachelors degree, that is a problem. - If we are not sure about the possible obstacles
on the journey to the bachelors degree, how can
we avoid this same problem?
3Defining the Problem (Continued)
- It would also help if Oakton students knew the
ingredients for success on the road to the
bachelors degree. - It is crucial in this day and time that Oakton
students get bachelors degrees. - What would stop them? What would help them?
4Explaining the Goal
- Our goal was to find out what factors were in
play in dropping out of college and in persisting
to the bachelors degree. - We brainstormed for these possible factors.
- We came up with 8 factors and formed 8 research
teams.
58 Research Questions
- What is the relationship between college failure
and/or success and - academic readiness
- fraternities/sororities
- university tuition expenses
- student employment
6 8 Research Questions
- What is the relationship between college failure
and or success and - racial/religious intolerance
- binge drinking/partying
- social/emotional problems
- physical changes

- Sense of Community
- Physical exertion
- Real Learning
- Highlighting facts from studies over what
students have heard
- Marketing
- Table tents in cafeteria
- Flyers in key places
- Announcement on My Oakton Portal Page
- Letter or postcard sent home
- On Oakton TV screens
- Announcement in Occurrence
- Students must RSVP
16Journey to the BachelorsDegree Seminar
Characteristics
- Physical Set-up
- Room 1604, 1606, or 1608
- Long tables along the walls for food and
beverages - 8-10 round tables with 6 chairs at each
- Good-sized space in the middle for performances
or role-playing
- Technology Needed
- Laptop with Power Point
- Clickers for taking instant polls
- Microphones (one at each table and wireless ones
for guest speakers)
17Journey to the BachelorsDegree Seminar
Characteristics
- Methods of Delivery
- Various Guest Speakers from the college
- Lecture for a fraction of the time
- Two-Way Discussion lots of the time
- Small group projects and discussions at the
tables - Power Point
- Ways to drive home important information
- Students do not want pure lecture
- The most important information must be
internalized by the students - Role-playing, fun exercises, guided discussion,
film clips, and plenty of old-fashioned
communication will be best
18Journey to the BachelorsDegree Seminar
Characteristics
- Content we must teach
- Community college has raised the bar of its
standards students can feel secure that they
are getting an education parallel to that of the
average university - Joining frats or sororities can lead students to
massive drinking, academic dishonesty,
affiliation with a bad crowd, or drug use - College tuition is rising, financial aid is
harder to get, and its getting harder to afford
a degree - Racial, Religious, and Sexual intolerance is
alive at schools join positive programming or
feel alienated -
- Students who work suffer from lower GPAs the
more hours they work, the lower their GPA - Students do worse in their classes compared to
students that do not involve themselves with
drinking or attending parties - Health risks are high at college HIV,
pregnancies, injuries, death. Can cause missing
class or worse. - Emotional stress can lead to insomnia,
depression, and drinking Stressed out students
dont do well in school
19How we would conductAssessment
- How can we be sure our Seminar was effective?
- We do have several options
- One option is to have each guest fill out a short
survey before leaving - Another option is to use the clicker system ask
the students a question and have them click their
answers - Last option could be sending home a survey, but
return rates for these tend to be low - We would then study the results of our survey and
make the necessary changes for the next time we
offer the seminar.
20Thank you!
- Do you have any questions?
