Introduction

• . technological developments and the increasing
  presence of a globalized economy (Gurr 2004
  Prewitt 2004 Uhl-Bien, Marion, and McKelvey
  2007 Bass 1999 Child McGrath 2001) have lead
  to fundamental changes in the way education
  institutions organize and operate.
• As new technologies, such as Internet
  communication and personal communication devices,
  increasingly play a role in the organization and
  diffusion of capital in the knowledge economy,
  so too must organizational structures change to
  accommodate economic changes and new demands.

Definition of Leadership

• . a set of characteristics and behaviors that
  together enable organizations, and the
  individuals in them, to create optimal
  organizational conditions for realizing
  organizational goals.

• Economic issues
• Global economic change, and the current
  recession, means scarcer resources for higher
  education.
• Funding for higher education has been in decline
  since the post war era.
• 2. Changing demographics
• Existing higher education systems will not
  satisfy the growing demand, in quality or
  quantity, for enrollment as the college-aged
  population increases, as the aging population
  increases and these lifelong learners enroll in
  increasing numbers.
• Globalization and intercultural relations.
• Demand for Accountability
• 4. Teaching and learning
• Changing faculty roles increases the need for
  faculty development and support .
• Information, and knowledge, is growing
  exponentially.
• Instruction must become more learner-centered and
  self-directed.
• The role of faculty as teacher and student as
  learner must change .

• Technological opportunities for higher education
  is becoming more diverse and ubiquitous .
• There is huge growth in Internet use.
