Title: Nanoprobe Discussion Session Summary

Nanoprobe Discussion Session Summary
  • What are the key scientific drivers? What
experiments will NSLS-II enable that are not
    presently possible?
  • Spatial Fluorescence Maps, Differential phase
    contrast, nanostructures/catalyst structure
    determination. Dilute systems Composition.
    Spectroscopy.
  • What technical capabilities will these require?
    (Beamlines, endstations, undulators)
  • Undulator
  • 2 beam endstations 1nm, and 10-20nm
  • Build 2 separate endstations, which will allow a
    wider range of tools (diffraction..)
  • Use/include achromatic optics (mirrors) for the
    lower resolution,
  • Monolithic sample/optics assembly
  • X-ray zoom to make it more like an optical
    microscope. (Limited full field)
  • This instrument will require serious engineering
    design.
  • What detector requirements does this field have?
    Do these require RD?
  • Because space is tight in the business end of
these devices a large NA fluorescence detector is
    required, commercial design not available
  • Izero monitor for nanofocusing applications with
    mm working distances.

2
  • What software and computing infrastructure
    requirements are there? (Control, data
    acquisition, analysis)
  • Since one may have limited data sets (limited
rotations, limited detector access, one has to
have software that can help piece together
different pieces, for example fluorescence map
with transmission phase contrast map. Phase
    retrieval
  • Any particular conventional facility
    requirements?
  • Noise/vibrations mitigation. Hutch temperature
    control. Floor monitoring. Electrical noise.
  • Any particular accelerator requirements?
  • Beam position monitors to keep beam stable and
perhaps ultimately feed into the sample
    positioning assembly.
  • Environment?
