Collins Folder Review (Recommendations)
  • Maintain Folder Review Process ½ day in April
    2007 with Mark
  • Strong September and May focus on writing with
    MEAP genre writing assignments.
  • Students need to oral read papers before turning
them in to teachers. Check marks should be made
    to show process.
  • Establish a habit of revisiting past papers
throughout the year. Indicate revisited papers
with a RV at the top of the page.
  • Use of Teachers Implementation Folder for
    organization.

27
Student Grades vs. MEAP
28
Student Grades vs. MEAP
29
Student Grades vs. MEAP
  • 15 out of 36 students who failed ELA MEAP had
grades better than D for the year
  • 26 out of 43 students who failed Math MEAP had
grades better than D for the year
  • Why are so many failing MEAP with grades of C- or
    better?

30
8th Grade Technology Assessment
  • 100 out of 155 students passed the technology
assessment at 70 proficiency or above. We do
not have data at this time comparing our school
to others in Muskegon County who took the same
    test.

Vocabulary Tests
  • Test Results showed increases at each level and
    in each subject area.
  • Discussion took place about the test as it
    assesses content area vocabulary.
  • Questions arose about formative assessments for
lessons and how vocabulary was assessed short
term by teachers through the instructional
    processes.
  • The need for a pre and post vocabulary test was
    questioned.
  • A suggestion was made to not requiring teachers
to do the vocabulary tests next school year, as
it was believed that teachers do not need the
assessment to be accountable for teaching the
    vocabulary.
  • It is, however, very important to continue to
    build vocabulary school wide.

44
Iowa Test Scores
  • Scores reflect an overall increase in student
    achievement in ELA and Math.
  • Data for ELA and Math should be reviewed by
associated teachers as another means of
    evaluating of student learning.
  • An alternative assessment (beyond MEAP) is
required as part of a comprehensive school
    improvement plan

45
E.L.A. Writing Assessment
  • Students showed growth in writing skills from 6th
    to 8th grade.
  • Student growth in writing has developmental
    factors.
  • Students are weak in vocabulary and grammar.

School Improvement Data Conclusion Statements
  • Students receiving grades of C- or better for the
year are failing the MEAP test at an equal or
greater rate than those with grades lower than a
    C-
  • There are significant gaps in achievement with
    sub-group populations Hispanic, Low Socio-
    economic, and Disabilities
  • We increased achievement in MEAP Writing scores
    during the 2005-06 school year.
  • Students have marked vocabulary deficiencies
shown both through reading and writing.

50
School Improvement Strategy Recommendations
  • MEAP achievement vs. grades.
  • We must have professional dialogue regarding this
    in the fall.

51
School Improvement Strategy Recommendations
  • Gaps in Sub-Group Populations
  • Build and promote a Professional Learning
Community among grade level teachers (general and
    special education)
  • Build and promote cooperative learning and best
    practice teaching strategies
  • Use higher order thinking in planning and daily
    instructional strategies
  • Continue to advocate for E.S.L. support

52
School Improvement Strategy Recommendations
  • Writing Strategies
  • Non Language arts teachers Same requirement as
this year with writing due each 6 weeks continue
to work with details and examples as FCA
    requirements.
  • Language arts teachers 12 required writings.
Must include cross-text writing assignments and
other MEAP associated writings. 4 of the 12
writings may include rewrites of existing papers.
At least 1 to be a published writing. (level 5)

53
School Improvement Strategy Recommendations
  • Vocabulary Deficiencies
  • We must address vocabulary deficiencies by
    bolstering daily vocabulary usage
  • Using the strategies of word walls and
    walkthroughs
  • Address other strategies

54
School Improvement Strategy Recommendations
