    in-class discussion periods)

  • Ask questions when anything is not clear
  • Engage in the discussions
  • Fully participate during in-class exercises

GROUND RULES

YOU
  • You absolutely LOVE geology
  • You need a science credit to graduate
  • and think geology is easier than physics,
    biology, chemistry, etc.
  • and need it NOW to graduate
  • Youre curious and it seemed like it might be
    cool
  • You loved Geology 101 so much the first time you
decided to audit it for fun
  • An ASU registrar computer glitch
  • You have absolutely no idea
  • Dude, this isnt Geography 101?

WHY ARE WE HERE?
10
ME
  • Im an ASU professor
  • This is my third year at ASU
  • Lived in Idaho, southern California, Rhode
Island, and Washington, D.C. before landing in AZ
  • I teach 2-3 classes/year
  • I study earthquakes and how they tell us about
Earths interior (down to the core and beyond!)
  • A lot of what I do involves computer work, but I
also get to go out in the field frequently
  • I love geology, but dont get to use it as much
as Id like in my research

WHY ARE WE HERE?
11
Your Geology 101 Tools
  • Textbook Marshaks Earth Portrait of a Planet
  • Read the chapters before lectures
  • Glossary good simple definitions of terms at end
    of each chapter
  • The books website
  • (see handout and course webpage)
  • The books CDROM

GEOLOGY 101 TOOLS
12
What do we Need to Succeed in Geology?
  • Visualization skills
  • ability to recognize patterns and spatial
    relationships
  • ability to visualize in 3D
  • Basic scientific principles
  • physics, chemistry, biology, math
  • Scientific inquiry desire
  • systematic approach to documenting, analyzing,
    and predicting observations

GEOLOGY 101 TOOLS
13
Course Themes
  • Planetary formation, evolution, and structure
  • Plate tectonics
  • Earth materials
  • Earth processes and resources

14
Lecture Schedule
  • Geology is much more than just rocks!
  • Break course into four sections
  • Understanding the Earth System
  • Earth formation, Earth structure, plate
    tectonics, minerals and rocks
  • Internal Processes and External Effects
  • Rock types and cycle, earthquakes, Earths
    interior, mountain building
  • Geologic Time, Earths Resources, Surface
    Processes I
  • Deep time, energy and mineral resources, Earth
    systems cycles
  • Surface Processes II and Earth Evolution
  • Earth systems cycles, global change, planetary
    geology
  • See page 4 of Course Information for details on
    topics and reading assignments

15
Geology 101 Exams
  • 4 Exams
  • -In class, 50 minutes, 100 points each
  • -One for each section of course
  • -See course website for more info
  • -NO MAKEUPS!
  • Study Guides
  • -Handed out towards the end of each
  • of the 4 sections throughout semester
  • No Final
  • -Except in place of an excused absence of 1 exam
  • NOTE This is a much more difficult option!

EXAMS GRADING
16
Study Guides and Exams
  • Some course material will not be presented in
lecture but will appear on study guide
  • Before the exam, you are responsible for
  • Reading the book
  • Knowing the material in the study guide
  • Asking questions when concepts and ideas are not
    clear

EXAMS GRADING
17
NO FINAL EXAM
  • A final exam will only be allowed in the extreme
    case of excused absences
  • You MUST arrange for the excused absence BEFORE
    the exam date
  • The final exam is
  • Comprehensive
  • Worth double the points
  • Therefore carries much more weight in the final
    grade
  • See Course Information and website for more
    details

Goals for the Course
  • ASU Course catalog says
  • GLG 101 Introduction to Geology I (Physical)
  • Basic principles of geology, geochemistry, and
    geophysics. Rocks, minerals, weathering,
    earthquakes, mountain building, volcanoes, water,
    and glaciers.

GOALS FOR GLG101
25
  • We also have these goals
  • Critical thinking scientific method
  • Analytical methods to decipher nature
  • Scientific principles that influence Earth
  • Observational techniques reasoning processes

GOALS FOR GLG101
26
Geology has its own language
  • Lots of terminology throughout this course!
  • Geology requires classification of diverse
    systems
  • Use the books glossary and index when dont know
    or forget terms

GOALS FOR GLG101
27
How can we apply knowledge from Geology 101?
  • Enriched experience in nature
  • Broadened perspective of Earth systems
  • bigger picture
  • relationship between humans environment
  • Become a more responsible citizen
  • Go on to major in geology
