Title: Environmentally Friendly Vehicles

1
Environmentally Friendly Vehicles
  • Erin A. Doherty

2
Why Change
  • High Gas Prices
  • Growing number of Hybrid Models
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Mileage Benefits

3
What are Hybrid Cars
  • a cross between a gasoline-powered car and an
    electric car.
  • Featuring small fuel-efficient gas engines
combined with an electric motor that kicks in to
assist the engine when you're accelerating or
    going up a hill.

4
Hybrid Components
  • Gasoline Engine
  • Fuel Tank
  • Electric Motor
  • Generator
  • Batteries
  • Transmission

5
Smaller Engines are More Efficient
  • The big engine is heavier than the small engine,
so the car uses extra energy every time it
accelerates or drives up a hill.
  • Bigger engines usually have more cylinders, and
each cylinder uses fuel every time the engine
fires, even if the car isn't moving

6
Hybrid Efficiency
  • Recover energy and store it in the battery
  • Sometimes shut off the engine
  • Use advanced aerodynamics to reduce drag
  • Use low-rolling resistance tires
  • Use lightweight materials

7
What's Available Now
  • Two hybrid cars are now available in the United
    States.
  • The Honda Civic Hybrid, (Top Car on the left)
  • and the Toyota Pyris (Bottom Car on the left).

8
Honda Insight
  • Was introduced in early 2000 in the United States
  • is designed to get the best possible mileage.
  • Honda used every trick in the book to make the
car as efficient as it can be.
  • The Insight is a small, lightweight two-seater
with a tiny, high-efficiency gas engine

9
Toyota Pyris
  • Came out in Japan at the end of 1997
  • Designed to reduce emissions in urban areas.
  • It meets California's super ultra low emissions
    vehicle (SULEV) standard.
  • The Pyris was honored as the 2004 North American
    Car of the Year.

10
Coming Soon!
  • Over the past four years, more than 100,000
hybrids have been sold in the United States.
  • To the left are some of the models manufacturers
soon plan to integrate into the consumer market
