  • France occupied all of Vietnam by 1884.
  • In the early 1900s it was also overtaken by
    Japan
  • Independence was declared 2 September 1945 (from
    France) following World War II
  • French continued to rule until 1954 when
  • France was defeated by Communist forces under the
    Communist leader Ho Chi MINH.
  • Then Vietnam was officially divided into 2
    separate nations North South Vietnam
  • US sent economic and military aid to South
    Vietnam enabling NGO DINH DIEM to stay in power
    and as an attempt to bolster the government
  • DIEM, also an oppressive leader, made many
    enemies within S. Vietnam.
  • US, under John F. KENNEDY just sent and
    advisors until 1963

  • DIEM was assassinated in 1963 by a political
    opponent.
  • KENNEDY was assassinated 3 weeks later.
  • 1964 Thousands of U.S. troops are sent.
  • By 1970 over 500,000 U.S. troops
  • US armed forces were withdrawn following a
    cease-fire agreement in 1973. (58,000 U.S.
    soldiers die)
  • Two years later, 1975, North Vietnamese forces
    overran the south.
  • Communist North Vietnam controls entire country.
  • Begin rebuilding cities Renaming Saigon
  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Economic reconstruction of the reunited country
    based on communism proved to be a failure and the
    economy collapsed soon after the collapse of the
    Communism in the former Soviet Union
  • It continued to improve very slowly as aging
    Communist Party leaders have only grudgingly
    initiated change and free enterprise
  • Only in the past 4-5 years has the country seen
    significant economic growth as the new leadership
    has openly restructured with an free-enterprise
    (capitalism) system.
