Questions for our Students
  • Who watches reality TV?
  • Does reality TV construct stereotypes?
  • Whats real about reality TV?
  • Why is reality TV so popular?
  • What are the structures and features of reality
    TV programs?
  • What television programs can be identified as
reality TV programs? What are the different
    categories of reality TV?

11
Ask the class
  • How many of them watch reality TV shows?
  • How can being a contestant on the show affect a
    celebrity's showbiz career?
  • What does the phrase 'reality TV' mean to you?
  • Why do people watch these types of programmes?
  • Brainstorm a list of shows that might fall into
each of these categories 1. 'Fly on the wall'
reality TV shows (such as Airport, The Cruise,
The Osbournes and Holiday Reps), the news, and
    documentaries.
  • 2. TV-generated reality TV shows (such as I'm
A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Big Brother).
  • 3. Shows that blend the two (such as the
    Blind Date format).
  • Invite students to share their opinions about
what distinguishes these three categories from
    one another.

12
Written task
  • The class brainstorm what they think makes a good
    reality TV show.
