Title: Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

1
Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

2
Fractions
  • A fraction is part of something that we have.
  • For example, if you have a whole pie, and divide
it into two even pieces, one piece would be
    called ½ of the pie.
  • If you divide ½ of the pie into two even pieces,
one piece would be considered ¼ of the whole pie.

3
Numerators and Denominators
  • A fraction has two parts a numerator and a
    denominator.
  • The number at the top of the fraction is the
numerator. The number 1 is the numerator of the
    fraction ½.
  • The number at the bottom of the fraction is the
denominator. The number 2 is the denominator of
    the fraction ½.

4
Decimals
  • When you divide the numerator by the denominator
    you will get a decimal.
  • If you cut a pie into 4 equal pieces, each piece
is then ¼ of the pie. If you divide 1 by 4 you
    get .25.
  • Since you have 4 pieces that are equal to .25,
then if you add all four pieces together you
    should get 1.
  • .25 .25 .25 .25 1

5
Percentages
  • Once you have the decimal, you can turn that into
    a percentage.
  • ¼ of the pie is equal to .25.
  • Now if you move the decimal to the right two
    places you get 25.
  • This means that ¼ of the pie is the same as 25
    of the pie.

6
Turning Decimals into Fractions
  • Just like you can turn a fraction into a decimal,
you can turn a decimal into a fraction.
  • Say you have a decimal that is .25.
  • To turn this into a fraction, first you multiply
it by 100. You will get 25.
  • Then use 25 as a numerator and 100 as a
    denominator. 25/100.
  • Now you reduce the fraction.
  • After doing this you will get ¼.

7
Turning Percentages into Fractions
  • Lets say that you have 50 of a pie left. We can
turn this percentage into a fraction.
  • All you have to do is to put the percentage
number over 100 and then reduce it.
  • 50/100 ½
