10The Menorah and the Olive Oil
- While other cultures nearby would use animal
fats, sesame seed or flax oil for their sacred
lamps, Yisrael was commanded to only use pure
olive oil. - What is the significance of olives, olive trees
and olive oil to Yisrael?
11Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Bereshiyt/Genesis 811 The dove came to him
toward evening, and behold, in her beak was a
freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the
water was abated from the earth. - Devarim/Deuteronomy 87-8 "For YHWH your Elohim
is bringing you into a good land, a land of
brooks of water, of fountains and springs,
flowing forth in valleys and hills 8 a land of
wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and
pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey
12Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Jeremiah 1116-17 16 YHWH called your name, "A
green olive tree, beautiful in fruit and form"
With the noise of a great tumult He has kindled
fire on it, And its branches are worthless. 17
YHWH Tzevaot, who planted you, has pronounced
evil against you because of the evil of the house
of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they
have done to provoke Me by offering up sacrifices
to Baal.
13Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Zechariah 42-6 2 He said to me, "What do you
see?" And I said, "I see, and behold, a lampstand
all of gold with its bowl on the top of it, and
its seven lamps on it with seven spouts belonging
to each of the lamps which are on the top of it
3 also two olive trees by it, one on the right
side of the bowl and the other on its left side."
continued
14Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Zechariah 42-6 4 Then I said to the angel who
was speaking with me saying, "What are these, my
master?" 5 So the angel who was speaking with me
answered and said to me, "Do you not know what
these are?" And I said, "No, my master." 6 Then
he said to me, "This is the word of YHWH to
Zerubbabel saying, 'Not by might nor by power,
but by My Spirit,' says YHWH Tzevaot.
15Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Zechariah 412-14 12 And I answered the second
time and said to him, "What are the two olive
branches which are beside the two golden pipes,
which empty the golden oil from themselves?" 13
So he answered me, saying, "Do you not know what
these are?" And I said, "No, my master." 14 Then
he said, "These are the two anointed ones sons
of the pure oil who are standing by the Master
of the whole earth."
Compare with Hitgalut/Revelation 111-13.
16Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Read Romans 1117-25
- What is the relationship with this passage to
Jeremiah 1116-17 and - Bereshiyt/Genesis 4819?
17Examples of the Importance of Olives
- Zechariah 412-14 12 And I answered the second
time and said to him, "What are the two olive
branches which are beside the two golden pipes,
which empty the golden oil from themselves?" 13
So he answered me, saying, "Do you not know what
these are?" And I said, "No, my master." 14 Then
he said, "These are the two anointed ones sons
of the pure oil who are standing by the Master
of the whole earth."
18But Spirit and Torah Cannot Be Separated
Proverbs 623 For the mitzvah is a lamp ner and
the Torah is light or And reproofs for
discipline are the way of life derekh chayyim
19Thought on Deception
The light produced by different kinds of oils
looks about the same.
20The Menorah
Shemot/Exodus 2531-32 (KJV) "And thou shalt
make a lampstand of pure gold of beaten work
shall the lampstand be made its shaft, and its
branches, its bowls, its knobs, and its flowers,
shall be of the same. And six branches shall come
out of the sides of it Three branches of the
lampstand out of the one side, and three branches
out of the other side."
21The Menorah
Brad Scott Commentary The word candlestick in
the King James English is from the Hebrew word
menorah. This word is taken from the word ner or
light. The ner or light forms the middle of the
word menorah. With the addition of the prefix and
suffix the light now becomes the apparatus from
which the light shines, illuminates, or exposes.
22The Menorah
Brad Scott Commentary If you read the text
casually you would conclude that this lampstand
is formed with six branches, however a closer
study reveals a middle shaft called a yarek. The
word yarek is generally translated as thigh,
loins, or body (B'reshiyth 242, Shoftim 830).
23Menorah
Brad Scott Commentary The six branches extend
out from the shaft and are yet one with the
shaft. Is it just a coincidence that believers of
the Messiah, whether Jew or Gentile are referred
to as branches in Romans 11? Is it just mere
happenstance that these branches are all one with
the central shaft or tree, and called the BODY of
the Messiah?
24Menorah
Brad Scott Commentary Even further, is it just
the luck of the draw that Yeshua uses this
lampstand to refer to His kehillot in Hitgalut
(Revelation) 120?
Read Hitgalut/Revelation 120
25Menorah
Isaiah 111-3 Then a shoot will spring from the
stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will
bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of YHWH will rest on
Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The
spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of
knowledge and the fear of YHWH. 3 And He will
delight in the fear of YHWH, And He will not
judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision
by what His ears hear
26Menorah
(by Slade Henson)
27Menorah
The Spirit of HASHEM is the base and central
pillar of the menorah. Match up the two outer
branches of the menorah, and you
notice how the fear of HASHEM leads to
wisdom (Mishlei 17). The second and sixth
branches match knowledge and understanding. With
counsel, we gain power (Mishlei 1522).

28Mixing of Wool and Linen
Shemot/Exodus Exodus 286 (NJPS) They shall make
the ephod of gold, of blue, purple, and crimson
yarns, and of fine twisted linen, worked into
designs.Chabad commentary There are two
classic explanations of why the Torahnormally
prohibits the mixture of wool and linen
29Mixing of Wool and Linen
Chabad commentary a) It is necessary to avoid
harmful influences. Inthis context, the linen is
seen as the harmful influence. Wool was the
offering of Abel, Adams good son, while flax was
the offering of Cain, Adams bad son.b) It is
necessary to avoid harmful mixtures. In this
context, neither wool nor linen is intrinsically
harmful, only their mixture.
30Mixing of Wool and Linen
Chabad commentary As we have seen before,
however, the forces of evil generally originate
in very high levels of holiness, but they have
suffered some tragic fall. In its source, then,
flax is embodies and expresses a very high level
of holiness. Thus, the mixture of wool and flax
is permittedin the priestly vestments since in
the revealedDivinity of the Tabernacle they both
expressed their spiritual source, and in their
source both are forces of holiness. Their mixture
there is therefore not at all harmful.
31Bells and Pomegranates
Shemot/Exodus 2833-35 33 "You shall make on
its hem pomegranates of blue and purple and
scarlet material, all around on its hem, and
bells of gold between them all around 34 a
golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and
a pomegranate, all around on the hem of the robe.
35 It shall be on Aaron when he ministers and
its tinkling shall be heard when he enters and
leaves the holy place before YHWH, so that he
will not die.
32Tamid
- The Continual Daily Offering
- Shmot 2938-46. The offering outlined in this
passage was offered every day, seven days a week,
and was totally unrelated to the Inauguration
ritual. The Torah mentions it here to tell us
that it was offered even before the Tabernacle
assumed it full sanctity - (Commentary by Slade Henson)
33News Item Application of the Torah
34News Item
- Man confesses to 8-year-old Shawnee
slayingSHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) - Shawnee police say
a man has confessed to the beating death of man
there nearly eight years ago. - Police Cpl. Greg Gibson says 24-year-old Matthew
Lee Williams told police he wanted to get the
killing off his conscience.
35News Item
- He was arrested Wednesday and booked into the
Pottawatomie County jail on a first-degree murder
complaint. He has not been formally charged. - Williams told authorities he killed 20-year-old
Rex Treat Jr., whose body was found in June 2001
in an alley. - Williams says he struck Treat in the head after
the two had an argument. - Police spokesman Dan Shumaker says investigators
are gathering evidence to corroborate Williams'
story.
36News Item
- Williams was released from a state prison two
weeks ago, where he had been incarcerated since
2006 on unrelated charges. - Little Rex, as the victim was nicknamed, was
brutally killed June 21, 2001, near his childhood
home on East 10th Street. His body was discovered
among the weeds in the alley. The cause of death
was ruled blunt force trauma to the head.
37News Item
- Police knew Treat was walking home when something
went wrong. A neighbor told police she heard loud
voices as Treat was talking with others in the
yard about 3 a.m. Dogs barked, then there was
silence. - An open gate was a clue that Treat almost made it
home. His body was found in the alley 12 hours
later.
38News Item
- That new development happened about 1 p.m. when a
man showed up at police headquarters at city hall
and asked to speak to someone about the Treat
homicide. - Gibson, now the property and evidence officer,
was a detective in the Criminal Investigative
Division at the time of Treats murder in 2001,
so he began to speak with Williams, along with
Detective Ethan Rieves.
39News Item
- During that interview, Gibson said Williams spoke
about details we felt could only have been known
by the person involved. - As they reviewed the thick case file and years of
investigative items, several pieces of the puzzle
seemed to fit, then Williams allegedly confessed
about his involvement in Treats death, Gibson
said.
40News Item
- Police had some physical evidence from the crime
scene some of that evidence and other facts were
never released to protect the integrity of the
investigation. With Williams confession, Frantz
said all of those details are being reviewed
with a fine-tooth comb. - Gibson, who interviewed Williams about the Treat
case Wednesday afternoon, is the same police
officer Williams was convicted of assaulting in
2006.
41News Item
- Williams began a prison term Dec. 22, 2006, on
Pottawatomie County charges of burglary, second
degree and assault and battery on a police
officer. Williams was incarcerated until his
