Title: All About Matter

1
All About Matter
  • By Brooke and Stef

2
Matter
  • Matter is anything that takes up space. For
    example, a computer is matter.

3
States of Matter
  • A liquid takes up any space in a container such
as a cup or glass. A solid does not lose its
shape (unless you melt it) and has a definite
shape. A gas does not have a shape or any volume
and takes up all the space in a
    container/cup/glass.

4
Solid
  • A solid is something you can hold. Usually,
solids are hard because theyre packed together.

Jacket
Bouncy ball
5
Liquid
  • This is the second state of matter. Solid things
you can hold, but you cant hold a liquid unless
it is in a glass. Liquid moves easier than a
    solid.

6
Gas
  • A gas is an element that you cannot see or touch.
Gas molecules are constantly bouncing around

Helium Atom
Neon atom
7
Changing States of Matter
  • For a Solid to change into a liquid, the solid
must be heated up. For a liquid to become a gas,
it also has to be heated up. But for a gas to
become a solid is has to have heat taken away
    from it.
  • Solid- Molecules are packed together, no room
  • Liquid- molecules are able to move around, but
    not that much room.
  • Gas- Molecules move where ever they want, lots of
    room.

8
Periodic Table
  • The periodic Table is a table of elements. In the
periodic table, if the elements are in the same
row, that means they have something in common. It
is separated into groups. Each group is
    different.

9
Neon
  • 10 protons
  • 10 neutrons
  • 10 electrons
  • It is used for neon lights
  • Symbol- NE
  • Gas

10
Oxygen
  • 8 protons
  • 8 neutrons
  • 8 electrons
  • Allows us to breathe
  • Symbol- O
  • Non- metals

11
Hydrogen
  • 1 proton
  • 1 neutron
  • 1 electron
  • Water
  • Symbol- H
  • Non metal

12
Titanium
  • 22 protons
  • 22 neutrons
  • 22 electrons
  • Armor, airplanes, steel
  • Symbol- TI
  • Metal

13
Silver
  • 47 protons
  • 47 neutrons
  • 47 electrons
  • Coins, Jewelry
  • Symbol- AG
  • Metal

14
Families
  • The families are broken up into Metals, Gases,
and non -metals. Metals behave differently than
gases. Very different elements can act in similar
    ways.

15
Metals
  • Conduction- This metal is good for conducting
    electricity.
  • Reactivity- These metals are very reactive.
  • Alloys- These metals are easily combined.

16
Molecules
  • O2 2 oxygen atoms
  • CO2 1 carbon atom and 2 oxygen atoms
  • H2O 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom

17
Mixture
  • A mixture is anything that comes from nature. A
    mixture is easy to separate.
  • Example Dirt, sand, anything!

18
Compound
  • A compound is a mixture of 2 or more elements. A
compound is a lot harder to separate than a
    mixture.
  • H 2 O H2O

19
Mixture vs. Compound
  • Compound are smaller than mixtures. There has to
be 2 or more things in a mixture, but there has
to be 2 or more elements.
  • Dirt, leaves and sticks
  • vs.
  • H2O

20
Salt
  • Salt is a compound. Another name for salt is
sodium chloride. It is made of hydrochloric acid
    and sodium hydroxide.
