Title: Sam presented with a very sore eye, we couldnt get it open to even see what was wrong
1Sam presented with a very sore eye, we couldnt
get it open to even see what was wrong!
2The ever resourceful Dr. Sarah Wagner called the
good doctors at the U of M Veterinary School and
asked for help! The ophthalmologist sent her
power point instructions on how to apply a local
block to the eye area and suggested giving Sam a
sedative.
3Dr. Wagner looks for the landmarks to apply the
local block while NDSU Veterinary Technology
students steady Sams head.
4The local block goes into the area around the
sore eye. After it takes effect it should make
Sam more comfortable and allow Dr. Wagner to see
what is going on inside the eyelid.
5Success! The block worked great and we are able
to open the eyelids and get a look. At first we
didnt see anything but then
6Dr. Wagner spotted a filmy looking object in the
corner of Sams eye. Very carefully reaching in
and grasping the object with a thumb forceps she
was able to remove
7A Foxtail awn! Here is the triuphant Dr. Wagner
with the awn. Look at the size of that thing. Can
you imagine how that must have hurt!
8Foxtails grow throughout the Dakotas and can
create a problem in all animals. Veterinarians
have found these awns migrating through animal
legs, tongues and if we hadnt found this awn
Sams eye. It was lucky Sam had our great
veterinary technology students looking after him!
