3 Museum services on the Internet
- Museums are for education and recreation
- 2. However as various Contemporary artworks
have been created, many works are too difficult
for a common - viewer to understand.
- 3. The development and practical use of
digital medias - It is rapid penetration of Internet
- Diversification of usage of a mobile phone
4Current Examples
The VANGI MUSEO Sculpture Garden Museum in
Shizuoka prefecture Offered mobile phone
guides simultaneously with its opening
in April, 2002. Text based guide.
5Current Examples
Toba Aquarium in Mie prefecture Has been
performing guided tours via mobile phones
since 1999. This device allows media in the
form of still pictures and video. Guides for
this system correspond to an exhibition label
(about 400 kinds)inside the hall.

A number of a water tank
6Current Examples
Yokohama triennale 2005 RFID Radio Frequency
Identification The experiment was November, 5,
2005.
7 Purpose of Research
These examples only allow for information about
works or exhibitions to be given or
exhibitions to be given. In order for
viewers to deepen their appreciation and to
broaden their view, these systems are not very
useful. Further there is no system that allows
for avoiding time restrictions and sharing
information and experiences with
others. A viewers own language can allow
for semantic attachment to a work.
8 Purpose of Research
This system is for a beginner Defined as
someone unfamiliar with art appreciation The
system has two goals observation and expansion.
One is to promote deep observation by allowing
the viewers experience to be recorded
into a mobile phone while the viewer is in front
of the actual work. Another is to extend the
viewers perspective by referring to the records
of others. Important design points for this
system. The interface design should make it
as easy as possible for a beginner in art
appreciation to - Write their own comments
- Read comments
9 Purpose of Research
Two Design Test Toyota Municipal Museum of
Art. Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary
Art. Purpose of Design Tests Allow User
Experience to refine system design.
10 Design Proposal
- When communicating information
- through a mobile phone,
- the information used must be intelligible for
users - and must allow for communication of
- information without stress.
11Concept of Design in this Research
In this research, based on User-Centered Design
(USD), a user is placed at the center of
the design process. ISO (International
Organization for Standardization) 13407 refers to
a standard regarding human-centered design,
called by the Human-centered design processes
for interactive systems. (was enacted in
1999) J I S (Japanese Industrial Standards),
which is a domestic standard, translated as
"a human-centered design process for an
interactive system", (was enacted in 2000).

34 The Summary and the Future Prospect
This system is for beginners of viewing
artworks and aims at deepening the viewers
understanding of artwork by allowing them to
record their experience and read while in the
presence of art. Results showed that people
find it difficult to grasp how to appreciate
the works of contemporary art, so it is
desirable to continue using this category of art
as materials for our future experiments.
