Title: Animal Science Foal Manikin

1
Animal Science Foal Manikin

  • Jacob Weiland
  • Maureen Umstead

2
Objective
  • Design and fabricate a life size neonatal foal
manikin which can be manipulated into abnormal
foaling positions and will tolerate water based
    lubricating gels and washing

Examples of Abnormal Foaling Positions
3
Background Information
  • Animal Science students are currently trained to
handle complications during foaling using an
artificial uterus and a dead fetus or neonate
    (newborn)
  • The foal manikin will be used as an alternative
    to this practice

4
Prototype ComponentsLegs
  • Hinges and bungee cord used for joints
  • PVC pipe used for bone structure
  • Front leg design slightly different from hind leg

Front Leg
Hind Leg
5
Prototype ComponentsHoof
  • Pro-E model created from a wooden carving of a
    hoof
  • Brush-OnTM 40, from Smooth-On, used to create
    mold of LOM Rapid Prototype
  • Final hoof cast in mold using Smooth-On product
PMC-780 with carriage bolt suspended in center

Solid Model of Hoof
6
Prototype ComponentsBody
  • Elliptical, tapered garbage can with lid for the
    body shell
  • PVC used to create defined rear end of foal
  • Legs were bolted to the body but allow for
    rotation
  • PVC pipe attached to front of the body for neck
    connection

7
Prototype ComponentsNeck
  • Four 3 PVC Caps connected using bungee cord to
    allow rotation
  • Caps oriented on ends to attach to the body and
    head of the foal

8
Prototype ComponentsHead
  • Molded from ceramic bust using wire mesh and
    plaster
  • Inside coated with latex paint and then filled
    with modified Feather-LiteTM plastic from
    Smooth-On
  • Fitted with PVC pipe to connect to the neck

9
Prototype ComponentsExternal Skin
  • Smooth-On Dragon SkinTM will be combined with
their Thi-VexTM II thickening agent to permit
    brush-on application
  • Their brown and black Silc PigTM (Silicone
Pigment) will also be added to aid in even
application and produce the final color of the
    foal
  • Nylon stockings will be used to bridge the gaps
located at the joints when applying the skin

Conclusions
  • The foal manikin can be placed in the abnormal
    positions
  • The skin will tolerate washing and water based
    lubricating gels
  • All important requested features have been
    included in prototype
