Title: Novel Technologies for LowCost, High Efficiency Electronics and Lighting Systems
1Novel Technologies for Low-Cost, High
Efficiency Electronics and Lighting Systems
2ELECTRONICS AND PHOTONICS NOVEL ELECTRONICS AND
LIGHTING
- WHAT ARE NOVEL ELECTRONIC AND LIGHTING
TECHNOLOGIES? -
-
Novel electronic technologies covers organic and
printable electronics offering the potential for
cheap, flexible electronic circuits and displays.
Solid-state lighting technologies offer the
prospect improved efficiency, energy saving
illumination products.
3ELECTRONICS AND PHOTONICS NOVEL ELECTRONICS AND
LIGHTING
- Improved efficiency Solid-State Lighting systems
could result in considerable reductions in global
electricity consumption. - Organic electronics have the potential to be
produced using much cheaper manufacturing
technologies such as printing. - The UK science base is strong in the area of
organic electronics in particular. - The UK is host to many key industrial players in
organic electronics and solid-state lighting.
4ELECTRONICS AND PHOTONICS NOVEL ELECTRONICS AND
LIGHTING
- Funding is available to support collaborative RD
projects that involve significant improvements in
the manufacture and/or performance of plastic
electronics and electronic lighting systems.
Projects can focus on - Low-cost organic electronic devices
- Technologies for low cost flexible electronic
manufacture - Solid-State light source technologies
(innovative lighting systems) - Improved efficiency-packaging techniques
5ELECTRONICS AND PHOTONICS NOVEL ELECTRONICS AND
LIGHTING
- IDENTIFIED NEEDS APPLICATION AREAS
-
- Application Areas
- Design and fabrication flexible electronics and
display systems, - Lighting Architectural lighting, lamps,
solid-sate lighting systems, - Consumer electronics Healthcare cheap
electronic systems including RFID tags,
disposable sensors and instrumentation.
- Identified Needs
- Increased system efficiency
- Reduced production cost
- Efficient operation in terms of power, heat
dissipation, or improved electrical
characteristics - More conformable device, electronic integration
and functionality, new substrate (printable
electronics)
