Biblical Marriage Rituals
2
Gods Standard for marriage
  • -Genesis 224
  • For this reason a man will leave his father
and mother and be united to his wife, and they
    will become one flesh.

3
Jacobs desire
  • Jacob wants Rachels hand in marriage

4
Labans Daughters
  • Rachel
  • younger
  • lovely in form
  • beautiful
  • Leah
  • weak eyes (some interpret this as being
    CROSS-EYED!)
  • older
  • Genesis 2914

5
Labans Proposal
  • If Jacob works for seven years for Laban, he will
receive his daughters hand in marriage.

6
JACOB WORKS.
  • ? Receives LEAH INSTEAD!
  • ? It is against the law of our land to marry off
the oldest daughter before the younger daughter.

7
Alternative
  • You may work for seven MORE years for Rachels
hand in marriage, OR you may choose NOT to work
any longer and accept Leahs hand in marriage

8
JACOB WORKS!!!
9
Marriage custom/rituals
  • Jacob and Rachel/Leah
  • Isaac and Rebekah
  • ? COUSINS WERE ENCOURAGED TO MARRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10
Fathers.
  • DECIDED WHO THEIR DAUGHTER WAS GOING TO MARRY!!!

11
Rituals (Contd)
  • Men were allowed to have many wives at once
  • Women, however, were only allowed to have one
    husband at a time!
  • Women were forced to wear wedding rings that were
not flashy. This was so that no one would think
they only married into the family for the money.

12
One more ritual
  • Always after a wedding ceremony they would break
glasses. This was to symbolize the fact that
love is very fragile, and that it must be guarded
    and protected throughout life.
