Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Principle
If you want students to believe that an activity
is important, devote class time to that
activity. Is reading important? Devote some time
to in-class reading. Is writing important? Devote
some time to in-class writing. Is it important to
talk about what youre reading? Do it during
class. Should students discuss drafts in

Diversity
Chapter 8 suggests that the canon includes little
diversity. Look at the handout of titles you (as
a class) read in MS HS, along with the titles
currently used at FDHS, then list the different
groups represented by those books. How accurate
is the textbooks claim?
How might you use YA lit to help diverse students
read positive portrayals of their own groups?

What are you reading?
