The Civil War Key Battles
A messenger for Lee dropped a copy of the
Confederate battle plans, which was found by
a Union soldier. Union General McClellan
learned of Lees divided forces and attacked.
The day- long battle took place at Antietam
Creek, MD. The battle ended in a draw and was
one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War.


Sunday, July 21, 1861, Southern Troops were
waiting at Bull Run. This was the first major
battle of the Civil War. Confederate soldiers
broke the Union lines and won the First Battle
of Bull Run.

south of Washington D.C. for hope of seizing
Manassas, VA
Battle of Antietam General Lee struck Union
territory by invading Maryland on September 17,
1862.
The Confederates attacked on July 1, 1863. Both
sides brought more troops. They fought for
three days in what was considered the largest
battle of the Civil War. The Union won the
Battle of Gettysburg, counteracting
Lees attempt to carry the fight up North.
Grants Union forces cut off supplies to
the Confederate soldiers in Vicksburg, and they
ran out of food. The confederates at
Vicksburg finally surrendered on July 4, 1863,
and the Union gained total control of the
Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.
