  • Phrixus (Athamas first son)
  • Step-mother wanted her son to be prince.
  • made s plot to kill him (bribed the messenger to
    lie to Athamas about the harvest.)
  • Only way to save the people was to kill the young
    prince

  • His mother prayed to the gods to save her
    son.(hermes answered.)

  • Helle was also saved by ram.
  • Helle fell into the sea and drowned

  • The boy, Phrixus, came safely into the country
    of Colchians

  • They were fierce people
  • Yet they didnt harm the boy
  • the king Æetes let him marry one of his
    daughters
  • Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Zeus, and gave the
    Golden Fleece to the king.

  • Phrixus uncle, who was by rights a king in
    Greece
  • His kingdom taken away by uncle's nephew, whose
    name was Pelias

the quarrel of cousins
  • Jason is Pelias cousin
  • Jason wants to be the king but he dose not want
    to fight for the title
  • Jason is willing to let Pelias keep the wealth he
    has taken, the flocks, and twenty herds of cattle
    and the fields
  • All Pelias has to do is hand over the sovereign
    scepter and the throne
  • Pelias agrees if Jason retrieves the golden
    fleece for him

They Met
  • She went to find her nephew prince whom jason had
    helped
  • She agreed to meet jason
  • Hera shed grace on jason as they went to meet
    each other
  • Jason spoke first and asked her to be kind, that
    her loveliness must surely mean that she excelled
    in gentle courtesy
  • Decided to give box of ointment to him
  • Medea told him how to use his charm, saying that
    it would make any weapon invincible for a day as
    well as the person who uses the weapon.

On the Return
  • Heroes then returned to the ships counseled among
    themselves.
  • One of the kings grandsons
  • Came and talked to jason
  • Said that if jason could persuade Medea to help
    him, jason could conquer all of the trials
  • Urged jason to go back and try to win Medeas
    heart

The journy
  • When they left they poured wine from a gold
    goblet so Zeus would help seed them along
  • The first arrived at lemons (where a woman had
    overthrown all the men except the king)
  • After leaving lemons they lost Hercules when his
    armor barer was drawn into the ocean by water
    nymphs
  • Zeus sent harpies after the men because he wanted
    to get revenge on phineuos because he could tell
    the future.
  • Argonauts, boreas sons and the north winds sons
    were about to fight the Harpies when iris stoped
    them

HERCULES
  • Jason gathered the best of the best to help him
    retrieve the golden fleece.
  • He asked Hercules, Orpheus, Castor, his brother
    Pollux, Achilles, Peleus, and many others.
  • They called them selves the Argonauts used a
    ship called Argo.

The vision
  • Pelias was told by oracle he would die at the
    hands of kinsmen, who wore a single sandal.
  • Jason came back with one bare foot

The Amazons
  • The next place they came to was a country of
    warrior women, called Amazons.
  • The Amazons were the daughters of Harmony and
    Ares.
  • The wind sped them past this place and they never
    had to fight the Amazons.

Marriage
  • Hera asked for Aphrodite's help.
  • Together they planned that Aphrodite's son,
    Cupid, would make the daughter of the king of
    Colchian fall in love with Jason.
  • The daughter of the king, was Medea, who knew how
    to work very powerful magic.
  • Aphrodite promised Cupid a ball of shining gold
    and deep blue enamel.
  • Cupid agreed and went as quickly as he could to
    the city.

Apsyrtus
  • The king sent Medea's brother, Apsyrtus
  • There are 2 stories of how Medea tricked
    Apsyrtus.
  • One was that she asked him to go to a certain
    spot and Jason killed him.
  • Another is that he set sail with the Argo and
    Medea cut him pieces, gave time for the Argonauts
    to escape.
  • In both situations, they escaped and headed back
    to Greece.

Murder
  • Jason said that he helped her because the king
    actually wanted to kill her, but Jason convinced
    him of exile.
  • Jason offered her gold, but she refused.
  • She was determined to kill Jason's bride.
  • She did it by placing deadly drugs on a robe,
    which she then placed in a casket.
  • She then sent her sons to give it to Jason's
    wife, and then the sons demanded she put it on.
  • As she put it on, she fell down dead as her flesh
    melted away. Medea thought about it and then
    killed off her children.
  • Jason was furious and tried to kill her, but a
    chariot drawn by dragons came down and saved her.
  • Jason cursed her, never himself, for what had
    happened
