Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey
  • Born Around February 14th, 1818 in Tuckahoe,
    Maryland
  • Born into slavery
  • White father (unknown)
  • Died February 20th, 1895 in Washington D.C.

Slavery
  • Raised by his grandparents
  • Started working on plantation at age 6
  • Sent to Baltimore to work as house servant
  • Mistress Sophia Keitley taught him how to read
    and write
  • Skilled job as ship caulker in Baltimore
  • Escaped to New York

Taking Action
  • 1839- spoke against slavery for the first time in
    public
  • Speech printed in Liberator New York Tribune
  • 1842- Appointed to Anti-Slave Society
  • Published Autobiography Narrative of the Life of
    Frederick Douglas
  • Went to Europe
  • British friends bought freedom
  • 1847- Returned to states,Broke from Garrison, and
    began North Star
  • North Star- published essays and poetry by black
    and white abolitionists

  • Douglas insisted. . .
  • Free men must enjoy social, economic, and
    political equality
  • Right to vote to protect liberties
  • Equal rights for women in education and voting
  • Free blacks to stand up for their rights
  • Races could live together as equals

After the War. . .
  • Dismayed over treatment of freed slaves
  • Called for liberty for all
  • Terminated all of his written documents
  • 1870- Joined group of stockholders to found The
    New National Era
  • Became president of Freedmans Bank
  • After depression, New Era and Bank were shut down
    ended careers in journalism and banking
  • 1877- Appointed Marshal of District of Columbia
    by President Hayes
  • 1889- President Harrison appointed him Minister
    to Haiti

  • 1st wife, Anna Douglass, died in 1882
  • Married white woman, Helen Pitts
  • 1894- At age 77, delivered last public address
  • Politically active until the end
  • Died at Cedar Hill, Washington, D.C. on February
    20, 1895
