What is our interest?
Mercury removal from coal-fired power plants with
simultaneous control of SO2 and NOx

Why Mercury?

  • Mercury is highly toxic to humans,
    ecosystems and wildlife,
  • mercury pollution is in now also understood
    to be global, diffuse, chronic.

Priority for mercury research will be addressed
in the 7-th RTD Framework Programme and other
appropriate funding mechanisms.
2. There are lack best available technology.
3. Poland is one of the biggest mercury emitters
in Europe. About 23 tonsHg/year is emitted
from only anthropogenic sources. Coal
combustion at heat and power plants contribute
about 60 of total emitted mercury in
Poland.
4. We have excellent installation and knowledge
for doing researches. The head of our team is
highly experienced person and he is an author of
some patents.

Short research plan
1. Collection data from third different power
plants concerning
- mercury concentration in coal (different type
of coals lignite and bituminous).
-percentage of mercury removal across
different air pollutant control devices
(ESP, wet FGD, dry FGD).
2. The estimation of correlations between coal
properties, boiler conditions and flue gas
treatment.
3. Researches at our pilot plant located in
heat-power plant.

Some of researches have been done. We used
properly selected OXIDIZER and MINERAL
SORBENTS. In our conception of technology,
elemental mercury undergoes oxidation by oxidizer
and then is removed on mineral sorbents and
filter cake. Moreover, sulfur dioxides (SO2) and
nitrogen oxides (NOx) are removed also.


The first results are very promising, because we
achieved about 90 of mercury removal, 60-70 of
NOx and about 80 of SO2.

We are looking partners who would like to
cooperate with us, especially who
  • are doing similar researches in laboratory scale
    with very good
  • measuring equipment


- are doing researches in industrial scale
- are specialists in mercury sampling
- could develop efficient instrumentation for
measurement, analysis and modeling removal
process
- could produce in laboratory or industrial scale
various chemical characteristics which depend
on flue gas composition
