All About AFES for Children 10

Is your Mommy or Daddy deployed overseas?
  • The American Red Cross is here to help you and
your family no matter where your family members
    might be deployed.
  • Every Red Cross Chapter has Armed Forces
Emergency Services (AFES) to help American Troops
and their families wherever they are deployed,
just as the American Red Cross has been doing
since the beginning of the American Red Cross.
  • The American Red Cross promises to be there
whenever or wherever our help is needed.

3
History
  • Clara Barton's humanitarian assistance during the
Civil War was the beginning of today's American
Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services. Since
the Spanish American War, the Red Cross has
served members of the United States armed forces,
providing essential services including a unique
and vital communications link to families at
    home.
  • The 1905 Congressional Charter established the
    purposes of the Red Cross
  • To act in matters of voluntary relief and in
accord with the military authorities as a medium
of communication between the people of the United
States of America and their armed forces....

4
AFES Today
  • Through the years AFES has changed as the needs
of military families have changed, but the need
to keep military personnel and their families in
touch is as important today as it was in 1905.
  • Today's American Red Cross is keeping pace with
the changing military. Using the latest in
    computer and telecommunications technology, the
Red Cross allows military members stationed all
over the world to send messages to loved ones
back home, during an emergency, or other
    important events. These communications are
delivered around-the-clock, seven days a week,
    365 days a year.

American Red Cross AFES

  • never alone. The American Red Cross will
  • always be by their side.
  • Whether deployed with the military, stationed at
  • installations or working at Red Cross facilities,

count on the Red Cross to provide emergency
communications that link them with their families
back home, access to financial assistance,
    counseling and assistance to veterans.

All About AFES

workers accompany over 250,000 U.S. service
members on overseas deployments in Iraq,
Afghanistan, Africa, South America, and countless
other places in the world. When United States
military personnel are deployed, Red Cross

men and women separated from their families.
