Title: LED LIGHTING

1
LED LIGHTING
  • An important component
  • in your strategic business plan

2
A BRIEF HISTORY of the LED
1907 Electroluminescence discovered
1961 First Patent for LEDs by Texas Instruments
1962 - GE found first practical use LED in
Hewlett Packards calculator displays.
2009 LEDs Are a major part of everyday
productivity in Phones, Computers, TVs, and
Cars.

SOLID-STATE LIGHTING
Solid-state lighting (SSL) uses light-emitting
diodes (LEDs) rather than electrical filaments,
plasma (e.g. in arc fluorescent lamps), or gas.
Solid state means the light in an LED is emitted
from a solid object not a vacuum or gas tube,
like incandescent and fluorescent lamps. SSL
creates visible light with less heat generation
and less energy demand. Also, solid-state has
better resistance to shock, vibration and wear,
increasing its lifespan significantly. LEDS are
in traffic lights, vehicle lights, train marker
lights, remote controls, etc.

LEDs ARE EVERYWHERE
5
LEDs ARE MORE EFFICIENT
LEDs ARE 4 to 5 TIMES MORE EFFICIENT! More
Lumens per Watt or LIGHT per WATT than
incandescent, or even compact fluorescents.
LED replacement for a standard incandescent 75
watt bulb is only 5 watts.
THE SAME AMOUNT OF LIGHT WITH LESS ENERGY.
LESS ENERGY EQUALS MORE IN YOUR POCKET!!
6
LEDs ARE MORE EFFICIENT
7
LEDs LAST LONGER
LEDs HAVE A LONGER LIFE-SPAN! Some LEDs from
the 1970s and 80s are still in service. Typical
life times are 30,000 to 100,000 hours, compact
fluorescent bulbs last only 8,000 to 10,000
hours, and incandescent light bulbs last only
7502,000 hours.
8
LEDs ARE COOLER
LEDs OPERATE AT A COOLER TEMPERATURE! LEDs
operate near 90ºF, fluorescent, incandescent,
quartz, metal-halide, etc. operate between 150 -
400 ºF.
BTU SAVINGS SAVE 3.413 BTU/h for every SINGLE
WATT!
LESS HEAT MORE SAVINGS!
9
LIGHT WHERE YOU NEED IT
LEDs GIVE FOCUSED LIGHTING!
Incandescent and fluorescent sources need an
externalreflector to collect light and direct
it, an added cost.
Down lights- are the directional, recessed
lighting commonin homes, offices, and
restaurants. LEDs are well-suited for this kind
of lighting they provide directional light
easily.

LEDs - MUCH SAFER TO USE
Environmentally friendly - LEDs CONTAIN NO
MERCURY OR HARMFUL GASES!
CFLs contain MERCURY, an environmental hazard!
EPA Cleanup and Disposal Guidelines For Compact
Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) June 2008 EPA
recommends the following clean-up and disposal OF
MERCURY Air Out the Room and open a window and
leave the room for 15 minutes or more. People and
pets must leave the room, without walking through
the breakage area. Shut off the central
forced-air heating/air conditioning
system.. EPA Disposal Guidelines of LED
lights There are NONE because they are not an
environmental danger!
LEDS ARE SAFE!
11
ARE LEDs GREEN?
YES! LEDs ARE GREEN! - Federal, State, and Local
governments classify LEDs as Green Lighting or
Efficient Lighting Systems.
U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) provides
Incentives for Efficient Lighting Systems,
including LEDs
Federal, State, and Local government incentives
and reimbursement programs, geared toward helping
individuals, businesses, and government agencies
achieve substantial reductions in energy use, are
at www.dsireusa.org.
12
BRIGHT FUTURE for LED
Using LEDs for general lighting is finally a
bright idea! LEDs have made huge advances in
energy efficiency! Industry sources and outside
experts say LEDs are now the most
energy-efficient lighting source available! They
use far less energy than other bulbs, last a lot
longer, and cost less to use over their lifetime.

ITS PAYBACK TIME
Rebates - Your local utility co. provides rebates
and incentives for Energy Efficiency.
Tax Relief - The US government provides tax
rebates and incentives for Energy Efficiency.
Reimbursements - Your state government provides
reimbursements for Energy Efficiency.
Partner Programs - Many organizations offer
Partner programs for Energy Efficiency.
IT PAYS TO GO GREEN!
