In the book Good to Great, Jim Collins compares
A P to Kroger. In the early 1950s the great
Atlantic Pacific Tea Company commonly known as
A P, stood as the largest retailing
organization in the world and one of the largest
corporations in the United States at one point
ranking only behind General Motors in annual
sales.Kroger, in contrast, stood as an
unspectacular grocery chain, less than half the
size of A P. Then in the 1960s A P began to
falter while Kroger began to lay the foundations
for a transition into a great company. Over the
next 25 years Kroger generated cumulative returns
10 times over the market and 80 times better than
A P.A P had a strategy right for the times,
but the times changed while A P stuck its head
in the sand.Kroger succeeded because they were
willing to change. A P failed because they were
unwilling to change.

into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will
burst the skins, the wine will run out and the
wineskins will be ruined. (38) No, new wine must
be poured into new wineskins. (39) And no one
after drinking old wine wants the new, for he
says, 'The old is better.' Luke 536-39 (NIV)

Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone
