Industry Links to Each other
  • All aspects of the industry couldnt survive
    without the other. Why????

have poultry for meat or egg laying.
  • Without egg laying we couldnt have meat or
    layers.
  • Without feeding, birds wouldnt survive

Without all of them youd
8
Production
  • Production of chicks that will survive into
    broilers, layers and roosters
  • Production of this can be for meat or egg
    production
  • Send millions and millions of chicks over seas
    each year.

9
Feeding Industry
  • Industry of feed production for millions and
millions of chickens throughout the US
  • Feed companies manufacture thousands of tons to
    feed chicks to adult chickens.

10
Poultry Meat
  • High protein
  • Low fat
  • Economical to eat
  • Quick to reproduce
  • Most Consumed Meat in the United States

11
Eggs Produced by Poultry
  • High source of protein- body builders or people
on Atkins diets (reason are high now
  • Used in cooking and baking (omelets, eggs,
    cakes, cookies)
  • Good Breakfast food

12
Terms Associated With Poultry

  • Broilers
  • Turkey
  • Chick
  • Rooster
  • Hen
  • Pullet

13
Birds Associated With Poultry
  • Layers for egg production
  • Example Leghorn (hybrids)
  • Broilers meat production
  • Example White Plymouth Rock, Cornish Crosses
  • Producers usually buy chicks from hatcheries
  • Turkeys must be artificially inseminated (have

  • Chicks shouldnt be allowed to get more than 3 ft
    away from light

See what Foghorn has to say..
16
When they arrive
  • Temperature 92-95 degrees under light, 70-75
    deg in house
  • Decrease temp. 5 degrees / week until 60 degrees
  • Teach how to drink right away
  • If chicks are huddled together under light too
    cold
  • If none are under light too hot
  • Should be scattered

17
Management
  • Debeaking remove 1/3 of the top beak and a small
part of the bottom (prevent cannibolism)
  • at 6-8 days old
  • Vaccinate (hatchery can do this)
  • Lighting birds naturally reproduce in spring,
simulate spring, chickens molt (shed feathers)
    production increases

18
What a Big Corporation Farming Looks Like.
