1HAIKU
Haiku (hy-koo) is a traditional Japanese verse
form, notable for its compression and
suggestiveness.
2In three lines totaling seventeen syllables
measuring 5-7-5, a great haiku presents, through
imagery drawn from intensely careful observation,
a web of associated ideas (renso) requiring an
active mind on the part of the listener.
3The form emerged during the 16th century and was
developed by the poet Basho (1644-1694) into a
refined medium of Buddhist and Taoist symbolism.

5TANKA
In 712 AD, the Kojiki, the oldest Japanese
anthology of poems, was presented to the
Emperor's court. In it, the god Susanoo is
alleged to have written the first poem to appear
on the opening pages of this book. This poem was
written in the Tanka form or "Uta" or "Waka" as
it was called then.
6Tanka is a poetic form that requires 31 syllables
It is divided into 5 lines of 5-7-5-7-7
syllables each.

8CINQUAIN
A cinquain poem contains twenty-two syllables in
five line.
