Nutrition Labelling
  • Voluntary for Produce (Butyou cant be half
    Pregnant)
  • How do you Lose Exemption? If you use
  • a nutritional reference or nutrient content
    claim
  • a biological role claim
  • a health claim
  • a health-related name, statement, logo, symbol,
    seal of approval or other proprietary mark of a
    third party or
  • the phrase "nutrition facts", "valeur nutritive"
    or "valeurs nutritives".

  • General Principles
  • Cant imply that a food is nutritionally perfect
    Superlatives such as "best, sensational, better,
    superior

Canadian USA Diferences
  • Format Bilingual or two tables in Canada
  • Content require Trans Fats
  • USA RDIs are different for vitamin A, Calcium,
    Iron, compared to Canadian Daily Values

What We Cant Say!
  • We cant talk to the function of the particular
    nutrient unless part of the approved claims e.g.
  • We cant tell people about the function and class
    of nutrient that it may belong to i.e. Lycopene
    is an antioxidant that helps
  • Words of concern when associated with a brand
    include Super, Wholesome, Healthy Choice (all of
    which depending on interpretation can lead to
    questions and enforcement) e.g. PLU sticker which
    say healthy trigger the health claim regs in
    Canada (PLU would now be considered a label)

  • The Canadian Organic Regulations published on
    December 27th, 2006, and are now law. (Dec2008)
  • New Federal Labelling Regulations (Dec 08)

Irradiation, Health Standards Labelling
  • Approval process Health Canada Application
  • Canada first approved the irradiation of potatoes
    to inhibit sprouting in 1960.
  • Government regulations require all foods
    processed by irradiation to be labeled with an
    international symbol for irradiation and the
    words treated by irradiation, treated with
    radiation or irradiated.
  • USA Movement to NEW WORD positioning

  • No labelling Requirements for Canada - voluntary
  • Must be approved by HC for Canada
  • Application process is long
