Title: Mapping the Middle East Gender Differences and Spatial Cognition of Students

1
Mapping the Middle EastGender Differences and
Spatial Cognition of Students
By Jessica Stempky
2
Introduction
  • There is research that indicates males naturally
excel in spatial development. However, others
believe experience and education, rather than
gender, is the main factor in spatial
    development.
  • These theories are investigated in this study. By
looking at mental mapping of the Middle East in
2000, and then comparing it to the current data,
we can see if the recent exposure to the area has
improved mapping or if the comparison shows no
    change.

3
Purpose
  • To examine gender differences in students
    ability to produce mental maps.
  • To determine whether exposure to current events
    increases performance of spatial tasks.

4
Method
  • A questionnaire and world map were distributed to
students. As part of the survey they were asked
to define the Middle East in two ways.
  • Mapping the area
  • Listing the countries
