A Belgian biotechnology company has just
developed a sugar beet plant which is resistant
to most common weed killers. If successful, this
will enable farmers to use one application of an
inexpensive weed killer rather than a combination
of several specific and expensive herbicides as
they do at present. Sugar beet farmers spend two
to three times as much money on weed control as
they do on seeds. The potential cost savings to
them are significanteven though the seeds
themselves will be more expensive.
