Daily History
  • What provision of the Bill of Rights protects the
rights of people accused of a crime?
  • A) federalism
  • B) due process
  • C) separation of powers
  • D) checks and balances

2
Main Idea
  • We will learn about governing the colonies and
the new ideas that spread throughout the
    colonies.
  • These events and ideas play a part in eventually
the American Revolutionary War taking place.

3
A) Governing the Colonies
  • The legal rights that Englishmen had won over the
centuries had led the colonists to expect a voice
    in their government.

4
Contd
  • The ideas of limited monarchy and representative
government were dear to them. In their new land,
colonists wanted to take part in governing
    themselves.

5
What events had taken place?
6
B) Magna Carta
  • IN 1215, English nobles forced King John to sign
    the Magna Cara.
  • This document was the first to place restrictions
    on an English rulers power.
  • It limited the monarchs right to levy taxes
    without consulting the nobles.

7
Contd
  • Parliaments greatest power was the right to
approve taxes. No monarch could raise taxes
    without the consent of Parliament.
  • What impact is this going to have later on?

8
C) Bill of Rights
  • In 1689, King William and Queen Mary signed the
    English Bill of Rights.
  • A bill or rights is a written list of freedoms
that a government promises to protect.

9
Contd
  • Promoted habeas corpus, the principle that a
person cannot be held in prison without being
    charged with a specific crime.

10
D) Self Government
  • House of Burgesses in the Jamestown Colony.
  • In 1701, Penn was forced to agree that only the
    General Assembly could make laws.
  • By 1760, every British colony in North America
had a legislature of some kind.

11
Contd
  • In many ways, the colonies offered settlers
greater political rights than they would have had
    in England.
  • 50 to 75 percent of white males in the American
colonies could vote. This was a far greater
    percentage than in England.

12
E) Freedom of the Press
  • Why do we have freedom of the press?
  • The Zenger case later helped establish a
fundamental principle. A democracy depends on
    well-informed citizens.
