4
Introduction
  • Portable fire extinguishers are effective in
    extinguishing small contained fires.
  • But, you need TRAINING and PRACTICE!

5
Should You Fight a Fire?
  • Has everyone left the building?
  • Has the fire department been called?
  • Do you have a clear escape route between you
    and the fire?
  • Is the fire contained to a small area?
  • Is there an appropriate, working fire
    extinguisher available?
  • Do you know how to use the extinguisher?

6
Selecting an Appropriate Extinguisher
  • When selecting a portable fire extinguisher, you
    need to know
  • What fire is
  • Classes of fire
  • Types of portable fire extinguishers

7
What is Fire?
  • Fire is a combination of oxygen, fuel and heat.
This is called the fire triangle.
  • Remove any one side of the triangle and the fire
    will go out.
  • Extinguishers usually work on one aspect of the
    fire triangle.

8
Classes of Fire
  • Class A
  • ordinary combustibles such as wood, cloth, paper,
    rubber and many plastics
  • Class B
  • flammable liquids such as gasoline, cooking oil,
grease, tar, oil based paint, lacquer and
    flammable gas
  • Class C
  • energized electrical equipment including wiring,
fuse boxes, circuit breakers, machinery and
    appliances

9
Types of Extinguishers
  • Water
  • Used on Class A fires
  • Extinguishes by reducing temperature
  • Advantages
  • readily available
  • absorbs a large quantity of heat
  • Disadvantages
  • conducts electricity
  • not effective on flammable liquids
  • freezes

10
Types of Extinguishers (cont.)
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Used on class B and C fires
  • Extinguishes by displacing the oxygen and
    smothering the fire
  • Advantages
  • leaves no residue
  • effective in confined spaces
  • Disadvantages
  • trigger mechanism and nozzle may freeze
  • short reach, affected by wind

11
Types of Extinguishers (cont.)
  • Dry Chemical
  • Used on Class A, B and C fires
  • Extinguishes by interrupting the chemical chain
    reaction
  • Advantages
  • can be used on Class A, B and C fires
  • will not freeze, does not conduct electricity
  • Disadvantages
  • leaves a residue
  • not as effective as other extinguishers on Class
    A fires

12
Installation, Maintenance Inspection
  • Install in plain view near an escape route.
  • Install away from stoves and heating appliances.
  • Read the owner/operators manual for inspection,
    installation and maintenance instructions.
  • Rechargeable models must be serviced after every
    use.

13
Proper Use of Extinguishers
  • Pull the pin
  • Aim the nozzle
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep side to side

Note If your extinguisher is empty, stops
extinguishing the fire or the fire grows larger,
leave the building immediately, closing the doors
behind you. Call the fire department. Ensure the
fire department inspects the fire site even if
you think the fire has been extinguished
14
Conclusion
  • REMEMBER, using a portable fire extinguisher the
right way requires training and practise!
  • If you are not trained to use an extinguisher and
a fire breaks out in your home, leave immediately
and call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number.
