• Occur abroad
• Excludes on-campus internationalization efforts
• Explicitly oriented toward learning
• Excludes vacations abroad
• Activities might be unstructured
• Learning is intentional
• Learning objectives are structured (L-goals)
• Significant interaction with host country culture
  and people is perhaps most transformative
  experience
