Title: Force and Motion

1
Force and Motion
  • Activity 1 Measuring Force

By Miss Laufenberg
2
MEASURING FORCE
  • Toys
  • Force
  • Spring Scale
  • Push-Pull Meter
  • Measure Force

3
OBJECTIVES
  • To observe the effect of pushing and pulling on
    objects
  • To use a push-pull meter device to measure
    force on various objects

4
TOYS
  • Paddle ball
  • Plastic frog
  • Walking spring toy
  • Super-ball
  • Hand-copter
  • Spinning top
  • Suction-cup ball
  • Toy car
  • Whats wrong with these toys? Why dont they work?

5
FORCE
  • A Force is another word for a push or a pull
  • In order for an object to move a force must be
    applied!!!

6
Force on Objects
  • What would happen if you increased the amount of
    force on the toys?
  • The objects should move faster and/or farther
  • What would happen if you tried to push a real car
    with your finger?
  • It would not move

7
Spring Scale
  • Tool that measures force
  • Spring scale measures force in newtons
  • Watch the demonstration!!!

8
Newtons
  • Force usually measured in units called newtons
  • Named for Sir Isaac Newton
  • An English scientist who lived in the 1600s

9
Push-Pull Meter
  • Demonstrate how to use!
  • Measured in newtons
  • Practice using the push-pull meter
  • Complete Activity Sheet 1

10
Measuring Force Chart Results
  • Which object took the most force to move?
  • Does it take more force to push and object or to
    pull it?
  • Does it take more force to pick up an object or
    slide it across the floor?
  • How much force did it take to life the book 1
    inch? 6 inches? 12 inches?

11
Conclusion
  • What did you find out about our experiment?
  • The same amount of force is used to life an
object, regardless of the distance the object is
    moved!!!

12
Final Summary
  • The students will learn about
  • Force and Pull
  • Spring Scale
  • Push-Pull Meter
  • Newtons
