Advisory
  • You will not use all of the strategies being
discussed today every time you do a search.
  • But knowing that these options are available and
using them on occasions when your usual search
strategies do not work is an indication of an
    informed and a good researcher.

3
Points for Today
  • Simple vs. Advanced Searching
  • Subject (Thesaurus) vs. Keyword Searching
  • Boolean Logic
  • Truncation
  • Scholarly/ Peer-Reviewed/ Referred Articles
  • HTML full-text/ PDF/ or ILL

4
Simple vs. Advanced Searching
  • Several search terms/phrases at a time
  • Allows a more detailed/accurate search
  • More non-term based options for limiting your
    search
  • One search term/phrase at a time
  • Equates to searching very broad or very specific
  • You use the simple search to find an author or
    title

5
Subject vs. Keyword Searching
  • Words you think of to use for searches, aka,
    natural language
  • Some databases provide a thesaurus to look up the
official term. They are not always called a
    thesaurus.
  • Official words in a database or catalog, aka,
    controlled language
  • If a subject term works in one database, chances
are it will work in the others as well.

6
Boolean Logic
  • AND searching for two or more terms in the
same record, Cult of Womanhood AND White
    Supremacy
  • OR searching for one or the other term in a
record, White Supremacy OR Cult of Womanhood
  • NOT searching for one term, but not the
other, Sojourner Truth NOT Cult of Womanhood

7
Truncation
  • A way to search for all the possible endings of a
    word at once!!
  • Find the root of your word, then
  • Shift 8
  • Ex. word would find word, words, wordly,
    worded, wording, wordily, wordless, etc.

8
Article Access
  • HTML/ full-text someone has typed the article
    back into the computer
  • PDF a scanned copy of the article
  • Article-linker/360 search will take you either
to the article in another Proctor Library
database, or tells you we do not have it available

9
Citing
  • Chicago -- RREF Z253 .U69 2000 http//www.chicagom
    anualofstyle.org/home.html
  • Will want to cite in order to avoid plagiarism,
the most extreme result being dismissal from
    school
  • Showing where you got ideas from/ providing
    acknowledgement

10

called Evaluating Websites to find out how to
decide if a website is a good choice to use in
    your paper
