Installation Dos (cont)
  • Check for pinched and abraded wires. These will
    result in operational problems later.
  • Check for insulation crimped in terminal block
    connections

8
Installation Donts
  • Do not place a Wireless unit in a metal enclosure
  • Do not place PIMs, WRI-Ins or WSMs directly on a
metal surface (Use the plastic spacers provided
    with the unit)
  • Do not terminate cable drains at the PIM or reader

9
Installation Donts (cont)
  • Dont mount PIMs and WRIs with wrong orientation.

10
Installation Donts (cont)
  • Mount PIMs high to avoid shadows

11
Installation Dos
  • Mount PIM above control panel
  • Minimize wiring
  • Use proper wire type

12
Installation Donts (cont)
  • Do not let internal antenna connected when
    installing a remote antenna module
  • Do not add to or cut the coax cable provided with
    remote antenna modules
  • Do not coil excess remote antenna coax in less
    than 8 diameter
  • Do not disassemble electronic assemblies (Remove
    with mounting plate attached only)

13
Installation Dos (cont)
  • Follow lock templates carefully. Misalignments
can cause malfunctions or inconsistent operation
  • Always re-link in final installed positions
  • Always functionally test units after installation
with CDT and end to end with EAC
  • Card reads
  • Lock operation
  • Trouble reports
  • Status reporting
  • Fail Safe or Cache if configured

23
Replacing a PIM
  • Clone it!
  • Same Address
  • Same Channel
  • Enable DCS (if needed)

24
Replacing a WAPM
  • Remember the old WAPM door assignment!

25
General troubleshooting guidelines after
successful linking between PIM and Access Point
  • Check the LED trouble indications inside PIM
  • -Loss of RF communication, Low Battery, Tamper,
    etc.
  • If there are trouble indications make
    corrections, else
  • Functionally test the Access Point while it is
properly connected to your access control system
  • -When a valid card is presented the lock should
release, and the LED indications on the reader
    should be normal
  • If not, verify configuration of your access
control software, if problem persists then
  • Functionally test the Access Point using the CDT
    software
  • -Manipulate the door status and REX, the picture
of the door should update accordingly
  • -Read in a card, the lock should release and the
    reader green LED blinks
  • If the above is verified, then there are
    configuration/setup/wiring issues with your
    access control software
  • If possible, temporarily connect a traditional
reader to see if the problems go away

26
Access Point does not link to PIM
  • If its a battery product make sure covers is
properly installed on the Access Point
  • Ensure PIM and Access Point are physically
    installed properly
  • Test the Access Point location with
    Pre-Installation Test Kit
  • Use the portable test reader and try to link with
    installed PIM
  • If link occurs with the portable test reader,
then the installed Access Point module is
    defective
  • If link does not occur with the portable test
reader, try linking the test PIM to the installed
Access Point module (be sure to place the test
PIM near the installed PIM location)
  • If successful, set installed PIM to channel 15
and try to link with the portable test reader (be
sure to place the test reader near the installed
reader). If it links, then use channel 15 on the
installed PIM and try linking to installed Access
Point module. If it does not link, then the PIM
    is defective.
  • If unsuccessful, there may be large metal objects
or shielded walls interfering with the
communication between the PIM and Access Point.
  • An interference search can be done using the test
kit. Start the test kit linking at close range
and slowly walk toward the installed Access Point
location. When the test reader LED starts
flashing red, this is where the signal is being
lost. If this is the case, then move the PIM to a
    more suitable location and retest.
  • If there are no metal objects in line, then try
moving the test PIM a few inches and try to link
    to the portable test reader.

27
Access Point linked, but intermittent RF
communications occur after installation
  • The RF environment is changing causing
    intermittent interference
  • Try to re-link (if a battery product, close the
    door after linking starts)
  • If linking occurs with door open but not when
    door is closed, then try
  • Changing the RF channel on the PIM (with
    dipswitches), then try to re-link
  • Move the PIM closer to the Access Point
  • Implement Dynamic Channel Switching (with the CDT
    software)
  • Note, on battery products, battery life is
    reduced by approximately 30.

28
Invalid reader data received by access control
system PIM-485
  • Functionally test the Access Point using the CDT
    software
  • Manipulate the door status and REX, the picture
of the door should update accordingly
  • Read in a card, the lock should release and the
    reader green LED blinks
  • If the above is verified, then there are
    configuration/setup/wiring issues with your
    access control software
  • If possible, temporarily connect a traditional
reader to see if the problems go away
  • Use the CDT, version 1.53 or higher, to decode
data received by the PIM. If incorrect, the
problem is at the Access Point module or reader.
  • Check for correct card code conversion of the
    Wireless reader using the CDT
  • Check card format setting in the access control
    system

29
Invalid reader data received by access control
system PIM-TD2
  • Check the data wire connections from the PIM to
the access control system including reader
negative to PIM ground and data lines not
    reversed.
  • Check for correct shielded cable with drains
    properly terminated
  • Functionally test the Access Point using the CDT
    software
  • Manipulate the door status and REX, the picture
of the door should update accordingly
  • Read in a card, the lock should release and the
    reader green LED blinks
  • If the above is verified, then there are
    configuration/setup/wiring issues with your
    access control software
  • If possible, temporarily connect a traditional
reader to see if the problems go away
  • Check card format setting in the access control
    system
  • Check for correct card code conversion of the
    Wireless reader using the CDT
  • If the other side of the PIM is working properly,
then try temporarily swapping the connections at
the PIM to determine if the PIM is defective

30
Access granted by EAC but Access Point indicates
access denied PIM-485
  • Functionally test the Access Point using the CDT
    software
  • Set to Grant Access, read in a card, the lock
should release and the reader green LED blinks
  • If the above is verified, then there are
    configuration/setup/wiring issues with your
    access control software
  • If possible, temporarily connect a traditional
reader to see if the problems go away
  • If the units work properly on the CDT, then
extend the First , Delay and Retry and
retest with the EAC. If extending the query time
works, the following are the recommended
    parameters to change
  • For battery powered Access Points adjusting
First and Delay are preferred to prevent
    shortened battery life
  • For WRIs adjusting Retry is preferred to
minimize unlock response when the panel response
is faster on any given request to unlock
  • If the Access Point module does not unlock in any
of the scenarios above and no other problems are
found, then the Access Point module is defective

31
Access granted by EAC but Access Point indicates
access denied PIM-TD2
  • Check EAC relay input to the PIM STK-NO and
    STK-COM
  • Temporarily place a short across STK-NO and
STK-COM at the PIM, when a valid card is read, an
Access Point should unlock, if it does, then
Wireless units are functioning (verify wiring and
configuration of your access control software)
  • Check that the PIM is receiving the relay input
with a DC voltmeter across STK-NO and STK-COM.
This should read 5 VDC with the relay open and 0
    VDC with the relay closed.
  • Functionally test the Access Point using the CDT
    software
  • Set to Grant Access, read in a card, the lock
should release and the reader green LED blinks
  • If the above is verified, then there are
    configuration/setup/wiring issues with your
    access control software
  • If possible, temporarily connect a traditional
reader to see if the problems go away
  • If the Access Point module does not unlock in any
of the scenarios above and no other problems are
found, then the Access Point module is defective

32
Card data is corrupted to the EAC and/or false
door status, requests to exit, and troubles
reported by PIM
  • Verify CDT configuration settings
  • Verify proper wiring, grounding and drain
    terminations
  • Make sure the specified shielded cable or
equivalent is used to connect the PIM to EAC and
to connect the WRI to reader and status switches.
  • PIM ground, EAC reader ground and status input
ground must be terminated together at the EAC.
The exception is when slave relays are used on
PIM status outputs to supervised EAC inputs.
  • Terminate the drain at the EAC and let open at
    the PIM.
  • Terminate the reader cable drain at the WRI
    reader GND.

33
Battery Lockset or Exit Device does not react on
a card read
  • Check reader tamper switch engagement
  • A reader tamper disables the reader it appears
    dead
  • PIM-TD2 reports a trouble and flashes the trouble
    red LED 3 times
  • PIM-485 reports a tamper
  • Make sure reader cover has foam spacer to
    reliably activate the switch
  • Make sure the reader cover is properly seated and
    screws are snug
  • Test reader by holding the tamper switch down and
    attempting a card read
  • If LEDs start flashing 20 sec after read, then
Request to Exit is shorted (and the reader thinks
you are trying to link with a PIM)
  • Check for low battery voltage

34
Battery product fails to read cards or is
intermittent
  • Proximity Card Readers
  • Card presentation technique is critical
  • Card must be presented directly in front of
optical window, do not wave card in front of
    reader
  • Read range may be reduced in sunlight
  • Check for low battery. The prox card read is
typically the first function lost with a low
    battery.
  • Initial low battery symptom is extra time
    required between card reads
  • Mag Stripe Readers
  • Teflon shim must be in place for the card present
    switch
  • Make sure the reader is for the correct track to
    read the data
  • Data must be in track 2 format (75 bpi)
    regardless of track used
  • Note actions from the last read must be
completed before the next card can be read
  • If possible replace the reader with a known good
reader, if problems persist, possible bad
    transceiver

35
Battery Lockset or Exit Device does not reliably
lock/unlock although the green and red LEDs
provide correct indications
  • May have incorrect Motor configuration. Using the
CDT make sure the settings are as follows
  • WEXK Motor 1
  • MIRL Mortise (Best) Motor 2
  • MIRL Mortise (SafLok) Motor 3
  • MIRL Cylindrical (Marks) Motor 4
  • WA5600 Series Mortise Motor 4
  • WA 993 Exit Trim Motor 4
  • WA5200 Series Cylindrical Motor 5
  • Motor runs in one direction only (should run to
unlock, and then again to relock)
  • Transceiver Assembly is defective
  • Motor does not run in either direction
  • Defective lock or Transceiver Assembly

36
PIM CR15 does not illuminate with power applied
and the other LEDs are not normal
  • Momentarily depress the PIM Reset switch, S3
  • Check that the input voltage is between 7.5 and
    14.5 VDC
  • Check ripple on the input voltage on an AC true
RMS voltmeter, the ripple should be no more than
    tens of mV
  • If none of the above are the case, then PIM is
    defective

37
PIM sometimes resets on its own or locks up
  • Check the power supply. It must supply at least
300 mA at 12 VDC and never drop below 7.5 V or go
above 14.5 V Note An unregulated 12 VDC supply
output voltage varies with input voltage and load
  • Check the ripple on the power supply with a true
RMS AC voltmeter, the ripple should be no more
    than tens of MV
  • If neither of the above are the problem, then the
    PIM is defective

38
Fail safe electric strike or mag lock controlled
by a WRI/PIM-TD2 remains unlocked all the time
  • The EAC normally open relay contact must be used
in all cases with a PIM-TD2/TD4, independent of
    the type of locking mechanism
  • Use the WRI STK-NC and STK-COM to control a fail
safe electric strike or mag lock

39
Card reads work fine but remote commands from
access control system do not
  • The Access Point module is in control of RF
communications with the PIM, and only
communicates during a heartbeat or physical use
of the lock (card read, REX, etc.)
  • WRI
  • Use the CDT software to reconfigure the default
heartbeat from 10 minutes to 1 second, commands
from the access control system will then happen
    within a second
  • Battery powered products
  • Kept in sleep mode almost all the time to extend
battery life (minimum heartbeat setting is 10
seconds, this will greatly reduce battery life)
  • For a buzz-in application, install optional
Request to Enter switch where the person at the
entrance pressing the button to wake up the unit
    to accept the buzz-in command
  • All units have provisions for the Request to
Enter built in. Only a different reader cover,
with a built in switch is required to add the
    function.

40
Battery Portable Reader (WPR2) with proximity
reader depletes battery packs prematurely
  • Do not store units with readers facing each other
    within 8 of each other.
  • Do not store with the readers facing a surface
    within 8.
  • Do not store with the reader facing directly into
    the sun.
