Some of the typical problems and consequences
facing cellular network operators
OPEX
X
The problem BTS failures downtime
The pain
Income
Causes for site failures
Direct consequences
Site support system failures
Technician site visits
OPEX
Radio system failures
Call drops
E1 / T1 interruption
Income
Temporary lower QoS Shorter calls
Unstable power supply
Extreme weather conditions (lightings, extreme
humidity etc)
Long term consequences
Site downtime implication
Oversized team of field technicians
OPEX
Wrong diagnosis
More routine site visits
Site accessibility
Sending the suitable technical team and equipment
Low customer satisfaction
Income
Higher churn rates
4
The problem many site visits and low QoS
Although RBS vendors supply backbone monitoring
When the RBS is down monitoring ability of the
faulty site fails
In addition to that when the backbone is down
there is no monitoring
Typical vendor monitoring allows for very limited
remote switching
RBS main vendors cant remotely perform E1/T1
loop-back
No ability of performing remote metering of
peripheral equipment
Site access control and security isnt handled by
RBS main vendors
Resulting in
Network management
Many site visits and low Quality of Service

M1 in Singapore had site-related technical
problems that were badly affecting the companys
performance
M1 is a one of Singapores leading mobile
operators with more than 1.5 million subscribers
For years M1 has suffered from Singapores severe
lightning storms that often resulted in shutting
down cellular sites
?
The company was looking for a solution that will
lower its operational costs and reduce downtime
After reviewing solutions by several
well-established companies, M1 chose CSI for a
180-site pilot(750K)
13
Above 200 sites installed with CSI controllers
around Singapore
The goal Deliver wireless remote monitoring
capabilities to M1 operation control to ensure
minimal site downtime and technical site visits

The RBSS logging capabilities enable us to
evaluate M1s benefits and its direct ROI
6 month report on 34 of M1s sites (number of
events)
Events may be requiring visits
  • At least 209 trips to sites saved
  • Estimated trip costs 250
  • Total saving 52K
  • 34 units cost 100K
  • Direct ROI 1 year

Events requiring visits
Substantial other benefits minutes of use and
churn
16
M1 Benefits
  • Minimize system downtime
  • Reduce technical site visits
  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Lower operating expenses (OPEX)
  • Enhance quality of service (QoS)
  • Increase customer satisfaction
  • Records accurately all the backbone inactivity
  • Apply remuneration program on staff performance

M1 has identified the great potential and is
currently negotiating an acquisition of 1,200
more units

Hundreds of cellular carriers with thousands of
cellular sites each
The US market alone encompasses about 200K cell
sites
There are over 860 operators world wide
Number of cell sites in the US (thousands)
The GSM association reports over 860 member
operators
13 AGR
80 of the subscribers worldwide are covered by
GSM networks
Some of the CDMA operators are migrating to GSM
Source CTIA
The enormous size of the market indicates CSIs
growth potential
