  • OVERVIEW
  • In November 2000, the NFL awarded Jacksonville
Super Bowl XXXIX, played on February 6, 2005. To
meet the NFLs requirement for the Super Bowl
host city to have at least 17,500 hotel rooms,
the Jacksonville Super Bowl Host Committee
chartered five cruise ships for use as floating
    hotels and entertainment venues.
  • This marked the first time cruise ships had been
used as floating hotels for the Super Bowl.

3
  • THE SHIPS
  • These five ships combined to provide 3,617 rooms
for approximately 7,000 people. Two additional
cruise ships, both private charters, also came to
Northeast Florida for Super Bowl week. The guests
on all these ships were not casual fans rather,
they were NFL sponsors and their guests,
    including a number of celebrities.

  • SHIPS at JAXPORT
  • Of these vessels, five ships docked at JAXPORT
    facilities
  • Three at JAXPORTs Talleyrand Marine Terminal
  • One at JAXPORTs Cruise Terminal at Dames Point
  • One at JAXPORTs Blount Island Marine Terminal.
  • The use of JAXPORT facilities was instrumental
in making the Super Bowl on the River a
    reality.
  • (Additionally, one ship docked downtown at the
Adams Mark Hotel, and one ship docked in
    Fernandina Beach.)

  • THE CHALLENGE
  • The biggest challenge was converting 27 acres at
the Talleyrand Marine Terminal into a temporary
cruise facility, complete with a 31,000-square
foot fabric warehouse erected for use as a cruise
terminal, and cargo storage areas converted into
parking and ground transportation staging. Two
JAXPORT tenants, Southeast Toyota and ICS
Logistics, graciously agreed to allow the Host
Committee to use their leased property at
    Talleyrand for this purpose.
  • After months of intense planning, the plan was
executed and worked to near perfection.

  • AESTHETICS
  • To transform a portion of Talleyrands working
cargo port into an aesthetically-pleasing cruise
operation, JAXPORT spent 235,000 on a
    beautification program, adding banners, fence
wrapping, plants and flowers, background music
and colorful lights along the dock at night..

  • THE TALLEYRAND CRUISE TERMINAL
  • To accommodate cruise guests at Talleyrand,
JAXPORT and the Super Bowl Host Committee erected
a 31,000-square foot temporary cruise terminal.
It took only two weeks to build and prepare the
    facility for guests.

Every person boarding any ship had to pass
through metal detectors and obtain a boarding
pass or credential. Security was a major
component of the planning process.
