Title: WAN eXpansion (WANX) Project

1
WAN eXpansion (WANX) Project
  • NISN Quarterly Teleconference
  • January 26, 2009
  • Mike Turner

2
Agenda
  • What is WANX Project?
  • Current Status
  • Who is the Project Team?

3
What is the WANX Project?
  • The WAN eXpansion (WANX) project is a bandwidth
    augmentation to the successful WANR
    implementation
  • Core bandwidth with be increased from existing
    2.5Gbps lambdas to 10Gbps lambdas
  • Multiple regional circuits will be enhanced from
    OC-12 to 2.5Gbps lambdas or from OC-3 to OC-12
  • Options are being explored to add IVV and VAFB
to the regional circuit design (Networx
    dependent)
  • There could be a couple of equipment changes, but
the overall architecture will remain the same
  • MPLS Fast Re-Route (FRR) will be utilized in the
    backbone architecture instead of RPR
  • Similar performance characteristics to RPR in
    core
  • Improved performance characteristics within the
    regions

4
What is the WANX Project?
  • Multiple requirements have driven the need to
    upgrade the network
  • High End Computing
  • Constellation
  • MCDTV enhancements
  • General network growth
  • In addition to the backbone circuit growth,
several Center LAN interface will be upgraded as
    well
  • MSFC and JSC will be upgraded to 10GE
  • ARC, GSFC, and LaRC are already upgraded to 10GE

5
WANX Proposed Topology
10 Gbps lambda
2.5 Gbps lambda
SONET OC12 (622 Mbps)
SONET OC3 (155 Mbps)
Core Lambda Services
MAF
6
Where are we?
  • WANX is currently going through the Project
    Management (NPR 7120.7) cycle
  • Funding has been committed to implement both
    circuits and equipment
  • Circuit procurement is dependant on Networx
    evaluation and selection
  • Proof of concept testing is currently being
completed in the NISN Operational Support
    Laboratory
  • Necessary documentation is currently being
developed to quickly meet critical project
milestones in a short period of time
  • System Requirements Review (Project Plan,
    Requirements Document)
  • Preliminary Design Review (POC Testing, Design
    Document)
  • Critical Design Review (SAT testing plan, Final
    Design Document)

7
Who is the Project Team?
  • NASA Civil Service Team
  • Carol Bryant is the Project Manager
  • UNITeS Team
  • Michael Turner / Chris Knoell are the Project
    Managers
  • Scott Johnson is the lead engineer
  • Jim Good / Shawn Kelly are currently running all
    testing scenarios
