Mitzvot in the Torah Portion

Literal Translation of Bereshiyt 231
And-they-were lives-of Sarah hundred year
and-twenty year and-seven years years-of lives-of
Sarah. Chai (life) is in the plural construct
form (lives of), appearing twice in this
verse. The same phrase is used of Abraham
(Bereshiyt 257) and Ishmael (Bereshiyt 2517)
9
Sarahs Life (Lives)
  • Rashi explains that the repetition of years
divides Sarah's life into three periods, each
with its own uniqueness and each period shared
the particular characteristic of its neighbor.
At a hundred she was as sinless as a
twenty-year-old, for until the age of twenty, a
person does not suffer Heavenly punishment. And
at twenty she still had the wholesome beauty of a
seven-year-old, who does not use cosmetics and
    whose beauty is natural.

  • The Small Kaf

And-to-weep-for-her
Kaf is the letter which means the open hand.
Abrahams mourning for his wife is described as
an open hand before God that cannot be filled or
satisfied. His petition to God for her return
could not be filled, therefore his hand remained
open. From The Jots and Tittles of Moses, by
Monte Judah, Published in Yavoh, July 2004

  • The Letter Kaph

The letter kaph translates into English as
palm.
From http//www.ancient-hebrew.org
12
  • Qiryat Arba

Genesis 232 (NASB) Sarah died in Kiriath-arba
(that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan and
Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep
for her. There are four views as to the meaning
of Qiryat Arba (City of Arba or City of
Four)
13
  • Qiryat Arba
  • City of the giant (descendant of Anaq) named
    Arba.
  • City of the four giants (anaqim).
  • City of the four couples who would be buried in
    the cave Abraham bought.
  • 4. Qiryat Arba has 4 names.

14
  • Qiryat Arba

The first and second view are related and come
from these verses Joshua 1415a (Artscroll) The
name of Hebron was formerly Kiriath-Arba, who was
the biggest man among the Anakim. Numbers 13
22 (Artscroll) They ascended in the south and he
arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman,
Sheshai, and Talmai, the offspring of the giant
(ha-anaq). Hebron had been built seven years
before Zoan of Egypt
15
  • Qiryat Arba

The third view comes from the Zohar Come and
see this place is called Kiryat Arba (lit. 'city
of four') because four couples were buried there
Adam and Chavah, Avraham and Sarah, Yitzchak and
Rivkah, and Ya'akov and Leah. (Zohar, Vayeichi,
802)

16
  • Qiryat Arba

The fourth view comes from Midrash Rabbah
And Sarah died in Kiryat-Arba, i.e. the city of
four. It had four names Eschol, Mamre, Kiryat
Arba, and Hebron. Why was it called Kiryat-Arba?
Because four righteous men dwelt in it Aner,
Eshcol, Mamre and Avraham and four righteous men
were circumcised in it Avraham, Aner, Eshcol and
Mamre. Again, four righteoous men were buried
therein Adam, Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov.
Four matriarchs were buried therein Chava,
Sarah, Rivka and Leah (Midrash Rabbah Genesis
LVIII4)
17
  • Abraham A Ger and a Toshav

Genesis 234 (NASB) "I am a stranger (ger) and a
sojourner (toshav) among you give me a burial
site among you that I may bury my dead out of my
sight." Rashi comments I am a stranger from
another land, and I have settled among you.
This is the first appearance of toshav, and the
second of ger. The first was in Bereshiyt 1513
18
  • Abraham A Ger and a Toshav

Bereshiyt/Genesis 1513 (ISR) And He said to
Ab_ram, Know for certain that your seed (zera)
are to be sojourners (ger, singular) in a land
that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and
they shall afflict them four hundred
years. Abraham described himself as a ger and
a toshav to the Hittites.
19
Israel is a People of Geriym and Toshaviym
  • Vayiqra/Leviticus 2523 (NASB) 'The land,
moreover, shall not be sold permanently, for the
land is Mine for you are but aliens (geriym) and
    sojourners (toshaviym) with Me.
  • Comments/Questions
  • Israel even in the Land of Israel are geriym and
    toshaviym according to the Scripture.

20
Israel is a People of Geriym and Toshaviym
  • 1 Peter 11 (Peshitta) Petros, a sent-one
(shelicha, Heb shliach) of Yeshua Messiah, to
the chosen-ones and sojourners (tautava, Heb
toshav) who are scattered in Pontos and in
Galatia, and in Kapadukia, and in Asia, and in
    Bithunia
  • Comments/Questions
  • Still Sojourning.

21
Israel is a People of Geriym and Toshaviym
  • Galatians 329 (Peshitta) And if you are of
Messiah, then you are the seed (zara) of Abraham
    and heirs in the promise.
  • Comments/Questions
  • Abrahams zera will be geriym and toshaviymNo
    matter where they are
  • and yet neither aliens nor sojourners..

22
No Longer Aliens, Strangers, Sojourners
  • Ephesians 212 (Peshitta) And you were, at that
time, without the Messiah and were aliens
(nokraya) from the regulations of Israel and
strangers (aksenaya) to the covenants of the
promise and were without hope, and without Eloha
    in the world.
  •
  • Ephesians 219 (Peshitta) So, not being strangers
(aksenaya), nor sojourners (tautava), but sons of
the set apart city and sons of the house of
    Eloha.

23
No Longer Aliens, Strangers, Sojourners
  •
  • What is an aksenaya? Stranger, foreigner,
    visitor.
  • What is a tautava? Tautava is the direct Aramaic
cognate for the Hebrew word toshav (The Hebrew
letter Shin sometimes becomes an Aramaic Taw).

24
No Longer Aliens, Strangers, Sojourners
  • Toshav/Tautava is also used interchangably with
ger, and this is how Stephen uses it in Acts 7
when he quotes from Bereshiyt 153
  •
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 15 13 (ISR) your seed are to
be sojourners (gerim) in a land that is not
    theirs
  •
  • Acts 76  (Peshitta) And Eloha conversed with
him, and said to him Your seed will be a
sojourner (tautava) in a foreign land and they
will reduce it to servitude, and will treat it
    ill, during four hundred years.

25
  • Bury Your Dead

Bereshiyt 236 (ISR) Hear us, my master
(adoniy) You are a prince of Elohim among us.
Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial
places. None of us withholds from you his burial
site, from burying your dead. Artscroll
Commentary The Hittites treated Abraham with
the utmost respect. Contrary to his modest
description of himself as only an alien and a
resident, they addressed him as a prince of God,
so respectfully, that they offered to surrender
to him even personal, family burial places.
26
  • Machpelah

Genesis 239 (NASB) that he may give me the cave
of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end
of his field for the full price let him give it
to me in your presence for a burial site."
Machpelah is understood to mean double and
comes from the three letter root
kafal. If this word is written with a hard peh
instead of a soft feh as its middle letter, can
you recognize the English word that is derived
from this Hebrew word??
27
  • Deeded Over to Abraham

Genesis 2319-20 (NASB) 19 After this, Abraham
buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at
Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the
land of Canaan. 20 So the field and the cave
that is in it, were deeded over to Abraham for a
burial site by the sons of Heth. Is this deed
still recognized today?
28
Advanced in Days
  • Gen 241 (ISR) And Ab_raham was old, advanced in
years. And ????  had blessed Ab_raham in every
    way.
  • Every translation I checked says years, or
age but the Hebrew says bayamiym (in-days).
  • Day is called light (Bereshiyt 15) and
Torah is called light (Proverbs 623).

29
Not a Canaanite Wife
  • Bereshiyt 243 (ISR) so that I make you swear by
????, the Elohim of the heavens and the Elohim of
the earth, that you do not take a wife for my son
from the daughters of the Kenaanites, among whom
    I dwell,
  • Why not a Canaanite wife? Was it because of the
    idolatry of the Canaanites?

30
Not a Canaanite Wife
  • Artscroll Commentary
  • The rejection of the Canaanites could not have
been based on their idol worship, because
Abraham's family in Charan worshiped idols, as
well. Rather, Abraham was motivated by the moral
degeneracy of the Canaanites. Idolatry is an
intellectual perversion, and as such it can be
remedied, but a lack of morality, ethics, and
modesty affects a person's entire nature, and
disqualifies a woman from being the mate of an
    Isaac

31
Dont Take Him Back There!
  • Genesis 245-6 (NASB) 5 The servant said to him,
"Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to
this land should I take your son back to the
land from where you came?" 6 Then Abraham said
to him, "Beware that you do not take my son back
    there!
  • Why not?

32
Another One of Those Places..
  • Perhaps you have heard or read
  • Exodus 63 (NASB) and I appeared to Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My
name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.
  • Except.Abraham called on the Name of YHWH (e.g.
Bereshiyt 2133) and in this chapter tells his
    servant

33
Another One of Those Places..
  • Perhaps you have heard or read
  • Exodus 63 (NASB) and I appeared to Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My
name, LORD, I did not make Myself known to them.

Bereshiyt 2133) and in this chapter tells his

34
???? Took Me From My Fathers House
  • Bereshiyt 246-8 (ISR) 6 And Ab_raham said to
him, Beware lest you take my son back there! 7
????, Elohim of the heavens, who took me from my
fathers house and from the land of my relatives,
and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, To
your seed I give this land, He sends His
messenger before you, and you shall take a wife
for my son from there. 8 And if the woman refuses
to follow you, then you shall be released from
this oath only, do not take my son back there.

35
Bethuelah and Almah
  • Bereshiyt 2415-16 (NASB) 15  Before he had
finished speaking, behold, Rebekah who was born
to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of
Abraham's brother Nahor, came out with her jar on
her shoulder. 16 The girl was very beautiful, a
virgin (bethulah), and no man had had relations
with her and she went down to the spring and
filled her jar and came up.

36
Bethulah and Almah
  • Bereshiyt 2443 (NASB) behold, I am standing by
the spring, and may it be that the maiden (almah)
who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, "Please
let me drink a little water from your jar"
  • Almah is used in parallel with Betulah which was
used in paralel with no relations with a man.
This is the 1st use of almah. What kind of wife
    was being sought for Isaac?
  • ,

37
Bethulah and Almah
  • Isaiah 714 (NASB) Therefore the Lord Himself
will give you a sign Behold, a virgin (almah)
will be with child and bear a son, and she will
    call His name Immanuel.
  • So, almah can defintely mean the traditional
Christian understanding based on the rule of
    first use.
  • The verse was quoted by Matthew, but did not
    originally refer to the Messiah

38
An Excerpt from Ten Little Lost Tribes
  • EMES Yes, Id like to ask you about your
    Immanuel prophecy.
  • ISAIAH Ah, yes. That was a sign given to Ahaz,
King of Judah. God promised that the siege of
Aram and the Northern Kingdom would not
succeedinstead they would be (gesture as if
breaking a stick) shattered. (VERY grand and
dramatically) 14 ? Behold, a virgin will be with
child and bear a son, and she will call His name
Immanuel. He will eat curds and honey at the time
He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good.
For before the boy will know enough to refuse
evil and choose good, the land whose two kings
    you dread will be forsaken

39
An Excerpt from Ten Little Lost Tribes
  • EMES Okay, so the boy, Immanuelthe one you
talked about to Ahazthe Northern Kingdom
    got(imitates Isaiahs gesture) shattered after
he was born but before he reached the age of
    accountability12 or so.
  • ISAIAH Exactlyand Aram, too.
  • JOSEPHINE (Tug on EMESs sleeve) When did the
    northern kingdom get shattered?
  • EMES (To JOSEPHINE) 722 BCE

40
An Excerpt from Ten Little Lost Tribes
  • JOSEPHINE What? Thats more than 700 years
    before Jesus was born!
  • EMES Rightso the Immanuel Isaiah specifically
prophesied about could not have been Jesus. In
fact, many Bible scholars believe that the
prophet was actually talking about King Hezekiah
of Judahyet this same prophecy would be
revisited as a sign and a wonder once again to a
down trodden Judah when Jesus is born.

41
Camels
  • Genesis 2420 (NASB) So she quickly emptied her
jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to
draw, and she drew for all his camels.
  • A camel can go more than two weeks without
drinking under a scorching heat. But, when it
catches the opportunity, in can drink more than
100 liters of water in less than 10 minutes!

42
Laban
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 2430-31 (ISR) 30 And it came
to be, when he saw the nose ring, and the
bracelets on his sisters wrists, and when he
heard the words of his sister Rib_qah, saying,
Thus the man spoke to me, that he went to the
man and saw him standing by the camels at the
fountain. 31 And he said, Come in, O blessed of
????! Why do you stand outside? I myself have
prepared the house, and a place for the camels.
  • What is Labans motivation??

43
Keturah
Genesis 251-4, 8 (NASB) Now Abraham took another
wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore to him
Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and
Ishbak and Shuah. 3 Jokshan became the father of
Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were
Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. 4 The sons of
Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida
and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.
8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a
ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life
and he was gathered to his people.
44
Keturah
Artscroll Commentary Keturah. Abraham remarried
Hagar, who was given this name because her deeds
were as beautiful as incense ketores, and
because she remained chaste keturah is Aramaic
for restrained from the time she was separated
from Abraham.
45
Gathered to His People
Genesis 25 8b (NASB) .and he was gathered to
his people. This is already a reference to
resurrection and life after death.
