2
  • Introduction
  • History
  • System Facts and Rank
  • Operating System
  • Architecture
  • Unique features and Benchmarks
  • Jaguar

3
Introduction
  • Red Storm is installed at Sandia National
    Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico
  • Engineered by Jim Hopkins and Bill Camp
  • The project was commission by the United States
    Department of Energys NNSA

4
History
  • In 1987, Sandia housed the first supercomputer
composed of 1024 processors known as the
    nCube-10.
  • Sandia received the only Karp Challenge ever
awarded, as well as winning the first ever
    awarded Gordon Bell Award.

5
  • Cray has the long tradition of being builder and
    implementer of the supercomputers
  • Cray is responsible for the construction of many
other computers on the Top500 list

6
Red Stroms History
  • Red Strom was installed in the winter of 2004 at
    Albuquerque, NM
  • The original implementation at Sandia was
completed for 90 million, and the system
recently went through upgrades that cost an
    additional 15 million.

7
Rank
  • Red Storm, is listed as the 2nd fastest
supercomputer in the world (Nov 2006
  • 101.4 Tflops/s scored on the LINPACK benchmark.
  • Red storm has achieved a theoretical peak
performance of 124.42 TeraOps (Feb 07)
  • Red Storm debuted at 9 and jumped to 2 in
    single 4 month period.

8
System Facts
  • 12,960 AMD Opteron Dual-core compute node
processors held in 135 compute node cabinets
  • 20 service and I/O node cabinets, providing 640
    additional processors

9
  • 40 terabytes of DDR
  • 320 terabytes of Disk Storage
  • Approximately 3500 Sq ft including disk systems

10
Operating System
  • The service and I/O nodes run a version of the
    Linux operating system
  • while the compute nodes run an operating system
    called Catamount.
  • Catamount is a light weight used to reduce the
over head of the os .

11
Architecture
  • The architecture of the Red Storm is geared very
    heavily towards solving scientific
    calculation-intensive problems, particularly in
    modeling and simulation.
  • The nodes of the system are arranged in a 3D mesh
    network

12
  • Red strom was built on XT3 architecture.
  • IBM SeaStar Interconnect chips are used along
with each processor for faster communication

13
Unique Features
  • Partitioning of nodes into Classfied and
    Unclassified
  • The system operates in two networks, and the
compute nodes can be migrated rapidly among them

14
Benchmarks
  • Red Storm achieved first place in HPCC test suite
  • HPCC is a set of tests designed to provide more
information than the traditional Linpack test
  • HPCC benchmarks measure the efficiency of keeping
track of data and of communicating data between
    processors

15
  • Red Storm posted 1.8 trillion bytes per second in
the HPC test to measure the total communication
    capacity
  • Which is 40 times more than IBM Blue Gene.

16
Jaguar
  • Jaguar is the another supercomputer built by Cray
    .
  • Jaguar installed at Oak Ridge National
    Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee
  • Listed 10th place with
  • 43.4 Tflops/s(linpack score)

17
  • Jaguar is an implementation of the XT3 model that
    Cray licensed from Sandia
