A Little Bit about Chess . . .
Chess is a game of WAR! You control one army
and your opponent, the enemy, controls the
other. The fate of your army depends entirely
on your own skill. In chess, there is not luck
it is not a game of chance. Chess is a game of
strategy. You must think about your moves before
you even start the game and before you move each
individual piece.
4
Do You Know the history of chess?
No one knows how the game of chess began. It is
not clear whether it was invented by one person,
or whether several different games merged into
one.
Board games have been played for at least 6,000
years, but the game we recognize as chess can be
traced back to 7th century India. It is believed
the game may have emerged from a religious
ceremony held in order to divine the balance
between good and evil.
5
Chess came to Europe from the Arab world along
trade routes and through conquest. In a short
period of time it became the most popular board
game in Europe.

10
Pawn
There are 8 white and 8 black colored pawns.
The Pawn is allowed to move in its first move one
or two squares forward.
After the first move it is only allowed to move
forward 1 square at a time.
Pawns are located at the start of a game in row 2
or 7 across the entire row.
move
attack
A pawn can only attack diagonally one space. It
cannot attack forward or backward only
diagonally.
11
Rook or Castle
There are 2 white and 2 black rooks. The rook is
allowed to move and attack in a straight line
pattern up, down, or across. This piece cannot
jump over other pieces and cannot move
diagonally. The rook must stop when it meets
another piece in the row.
12
The King
The king is the most important piece on the
chessboard. There is one white king and one black
king. The whole game revolves around the
struggle to trap the king CHECKMATE. Lose the
king and you lose the game. The king is one of
the least powerful pieces it can only move one
space in either direction, forward/back,
side-to-side, diagonal. The king can capture,
but it cannot move to a square where it might be
captured, or put in check.
13
The Queen
There is one white queen and one black
queen. The Queen is very powerful. She is
able to move up/down, across the board like a
rook, diagonal like a bishop as long as nothing
is blocking her path.
14
The Bishop
There are two white bishops (one runs on black
squares and the other runs on white squares) and
two black bishops (one runs on black squares and
the other runs on white squares) . The bishop
may move forward or backward along a diagonal
path for as many squares as it likes, as long as
no pieces of its own color stand in its way.
15
The Knight
There are two white knights and two black
knights. The knight is one of the craftiest
members of your army. The knight moves two
squares in a straight direction and then one
square to either the left or right side (Think of
this as an L-Shape).
16
Now that you know the pieces and how each one
moves, we will get out or chess boards and
PLAY! Good luck and remember good sportsmanship.
