Title: WRITING FORMULAS and NAMING COMPOUNDS

1
WRITING FORMULAS and NAMING COMPOUNDS
2
Binary Ionic Compounds
  • Write the symbol and oxidation number of the
element that has the positive oxidation number or
    charge
  • Write the symbol and oxidation number of the
element that has the negative oxidation number or
    charge
  • Use subscripts next to each ion so that the sum
of the charges of all the ions are equal to zero
  • OR CRISS CROSS
  • Criss cross the absolute value of the oxidation
    numbers and write as subscripts

3
NAMING BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
  • Write the full name of the positive ion
  • Write the root name of the negative ion
  • Add ide to the root
  • DO NOT USE SUBSCRIPTS AS PART OF THE NAME

4
BINARY MOLECULAR FORMULAS
  • Writing the symbol for the first element in the
name (usually the element farthest to the left).
Write the subscript according to the prefix in
    the name.
  • Write the symbol for the second element in the
name. Write the subscript according to the
    prefix in the name.
  • REMEMBER THAT THE 1 SUBSCRIPT IS NOT WRITTEN.
The symbol itself represents the 1 subscript

5
NAMING BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS
  • Write the nonmetal name of the 1st element in the
    compound
  • Write the nonmetal name of the 2nd element in the
    compound
  • Change the ending of the to ide
  • Put the prefix in front of each element to tell
how many atoms of that element are in the
    compound
  • If mono is the prefix of the 1st do not add it
to the name. If there is only one atom of the
second element then mono needs to be added to
    the name.
