Functions of the FRS

• What are the 3 main functions of the female
  reproductive system?
• 1.) Produce eggs-in ovaries
• 2.)Receive sperm
• 3.)Provide nourishment and protection for
  fertilized egg-in the uterus

• Ovaries-house ova and produce estrogen
• Ova-female egg cell
• females have about 1 million at birth
• Ovulation-releasing an egg every month
• usually only one/month
• usually ovaries will alternate
• Fallopian tubes-where ovulated egg travels

Menstrual cycle

• Approx 28 days
• Days 1-5menstruation-shedding of lining of
  uterus
• Lasts approx. 3-5 days, some longer, some shorter
• First periodmenarche
• Lastmenopause

• Days 6-11increase of FSH (which causes a new egg
  to mature in ovaries)
• Estrogens from ovaries help to build the lining
  of the uterus (endometrium) in preparation for a
  fertilized egg

• Days 12-16increase of LH, which stimulates
  ovulation(remember the end of the movie)
• A woman is now fertile!! (FAM)
• Ovulation predictor test
• Cervical mucus will also change at this time,
  which allows sperm to penetrate the cervix and
  get in to the uterus

• Days 17-28longest period of time during cycle.
• PMS (Pre-menstrual syndrome) occurs during this
