Statement of the problem
  • We have a huge growth of online learning and yet
very little research is being done on the process
of how online classes are created. Studies in
this field are incomplete and definitely very
little qualitative research has been done. One
study in 1995 pointed out the need for more
    qualitative research in technology education.
Yet, this has not been done.
  • Many studies have been done on perceptions of
faculty and students how they like online
    learning.
  • None found on my topic the process of design.

7
Purpose of the study
  • To interview faculty members of nursing
departments who teach online and who work with
    instructional designers in creating these
    classes.
  • How does this team approach work in designing
classes? Does it save them time? Does it make
    them a better teacher?

8
Why Qualitative?
  • Quantitative wont give me the feel and reaction
    of the participants, only numbers.
  • This approach is needed more in research in
instructional technology as little of it has been
    done.
  • Case Study focusing on the human factor and how
the process of design impacts the teachers
  • Phenomenology looking at the process overall as
    well

9
Approaches in instructional design
  • Lone Ranger model
  • Teacher designing online courses alone often with
    little or no training
  • Might just place the syllabus online with little
knowledge of what works in an online learning
    atmosphere
  • Systems Approach
  • With a team of at least an instructional
    designer, possible a resource librarian,
    technology expert, project manager perhaps

10
Intended Audience
  • Nurse Educators
  • Instructional designers
  • Department chairs of online programs

11
Outcomes
  • Personal and professional
  • Look at the design process
  • Learn more about faculty development in this area
  • How they like working with instructional
    designers
  • What teachers learn about this process
  • Does it make them better teachers

12
Methodologies
  • After recording the interviews, I will listen to
them and transcribe them. Using Excel, I will
code all the key phrases and see how often they
    are used.
  • After writing up findings, I will ask a couple of
the interviewees to see if I correctly captured
    their words.

13
Role of the researcher
  • My training as a teacher, counselor and
    instructional designer
  • My study really encompasses all three areas in
looking at the human interaction of a team
    approach to designing effective learning.
  • Constructivist worldview - learn socially with
    personal applications
  • Works well for adult learners as well

14
My timeline
  • Dec. finish proposal, 885 class, speak to
    dept. chairs about dissertation topic
  • Jan. comps proposal rewrite as needed
  • Feb. - proposal presentation to committee
  • IRB
  • March interview subjects
  • April listen and code interviews
  • May write findings, chapters 4 5
  • June rewrite as needed
  • July present to committee and have approved by
    July 15th, graduate on July 31, 2008
