Some basic rules

• Ireland has a fantastic wind solar resource.
• Wind turbines should be compliant with CE and IEC
  61400-2 standards use electromagnetic B.
• You cannot sell electricity to the grid (YET) !.
• Turbines should be full range turbines and have a
  survival speed up to 60 m/s (140mph/220kph)
• IEC 61400 will mean low impact, reliable safe.
• Wind can be noisy, listen to one before you buy.

  performance.

Off-grid or grid

• Off grid is where you are completely independent
  OFG -gt PGT
• On-grid is now considered a basic grid connection
  due to age
• Private grid systems are both grid connected and
  off-grid systems combined to take advantage of
  SMART
• Big disadvantage to basic grid connections is the
  power outage factor.

On-Grid Regulations EN50438

• Only Solar PV makes sense currently
• 5.75 kw single phase or 11 kw 3-phase
• Only makes sense for daytime commercial use, such
  as schools, office buildings, etc
• Free electricity within 7 years
• PGT systems are not limited by size
• PGT systems can also export

• Safety is paramount, this is electricity.
• EN50438 is the new EU standard for BGC
• New Wind Turbine standard (Pre-EN61400-2)
• Grid connections possible in 20 minutes
• CER New licencing process
• CER New micro generation process
• CER SMART metering
• CER SMART, REFIT REGO payments

Types of microgen to consider

• RULE 1 Good systems are hybrid systems
• Options Solar, Wind, others.
• New options with SMART metering
• Push/Pull hydro on farms, etc.
• Push/Pull swimming pools, hotels, etc.
• PGT with night harvest daytime export.
• PGT can take fuel cell hybrid vehicles.

Pros Cons of small wind

• P Irelands has a decent annual wind total
• P EN61400-2 turbines are very advanced
• P Easy to install, maintenance simple
• C Wind very intermittent
• C Wind charger wind turbine confusion
• C Cant be used on their own in off-grid systems.

Pros Cons of Solar PV

• P Last decades and maintenance free.
• P Flatter energy profile, energy every day
• P Ireland has a better solar resource than DE,
  approx 1000 kwHs 1,200 kwHs per sqm pa.
• P Solar available 365 days of the year and is a
  passive technology.
• P Can be used on their own in off-grid systems.
• C The initial cost. (BUT)

Invertors

• Standard off-grid inverter, to change DC to AC,
  latest technology are charging invertors used in
  conjunction with Grid or generator.
• Utility invertors plug straight into a socket if
  under a certain size.
• PGT systems comprise of both off-grid and grid
  connected invertors.
• Look for harmonics less than 4.
• Demo of a simple deep cycle battery, invertor and
  lamp.

Batterys

• Should be Deep Cycle 80 discharge
• Wet-lead technology is the oldest, and most
  proven and the cheapest
• With Solar management, 20 years should be
  possible
• Batterys and grid connect inverters have the
  same life span and cost the same price.
