The Project Overview

  • Presented by Katie Woliver, Wes Homan, Josh
Thurow, Elisa Munda, Anne Sammarco, Megan
Browder, Jessica Park, Ty Moore, Michael Twombly

3
The Project Goals
  • To experience and reflect upon social justice
    principles in action
  • Propel the senior class into the community to
produce a positive impact on the surrounding
    community
  • Achieve some visible impact before the end of the
    school year

4
Description
  • Each Summit student paired up with one or more
Whittier students to help them write stories and
work on their writing assignments. We served as
role models and friends to the kids.

Comprehensive Analysis
  • Weaknesses
  • Some difficulties we had included working with
kids that didnt want to work. We came right
after lunch and recess and they tended to be
wound up. They just wanted to talk to us and play
with us instead of work. We did the same type of
work every week that made it boring for us at
times and repetitious for them from week to week.
Tutoring more than one kid presented difficulties
because they often worked at different paces and
we couldnt devote all of our time to each kid.
Within the class, the students were at many
    different reading and writing levels.

Comprehensive Analysis
  • Strengths
  • The Good aspects of our time at Whittier
  • They were really grateful for everything we did
for them. Each of us felt like we made an impact
on at least one student. Every day we left, they
would give us hugs and beg us not to leave. They
were excited when we came and didnt want us to
leave. It made us feel like we were making a
difference in their lives. They looked up to us,
and it seemed like they we gaining from our time
there. The kids were very polite to us.

7
Procedures
  • We would arrive at Whittier and wait outside to
be buzzed in. There is heavy security at the
school and we had to sign in and wear a special
name tag identifying us as School Visitors.
Once we were all there and accounted for, we went
together down to Mr. Martellas room (Room 219)
and got to work with writing. An hour later, we
signed out and returned back to school, satisfied
    with our work.

8
Resources
  • Our group possessed very limited resources
    available for the children
  • As a result we provided
  • Halloween prize bags
  • Book donation
  • Pencils erasers

9
People/Services
  • The children are surrounded by teachers and
    individuals who care.
  • Tutors from both Summit and Seaton
  • In school assisted learning program
  • We took an interest in their extracurricular
activities as well. Many of the girls became
involved with Girls on the Run, and some of us
are even going to watch them compete at Lunken
    track in June.

10
Final Visit
  • The last day of our tutoring, we held a party for
the kids with, cake, chips, drinks, cookies, and
    prize bags.
  • We thanked them for allowing us to come into
their classroom. They were very appreciative and
    sad to see us leave.
  • The children thanked us, giving us cards and
    hugs.
