Summary Renewable energy is attracting
attention as the oil price goes up and the Kyoto
Protocol becomes a reality. The solar
photovoltaics (PV) industry expanded by more than
30 annually over the last six years and reached
2,500 MW and 17 billion market in 2006. It is
expected that PV market should reach 10 GW and
70 billion size in 2010. PV is a system
technology which converts the sunlight directly
into electricity and has many similarities with
semiconductor and display technologies. PV is
thus believed to be a technology that Korea
should take the leading edge if Korea utilizes
both the human and the hardware infrastructure
established by the related industries. As the
global PV market expands rapidly, the world is
experiencing a worsening shortage of silicon
feedstock. Technology development is performed in
three directions (1) developing solar grade
silicon, (2) minimizing the usage of silicon, (3)
developing new materials for substituting
silicon. Recent PV market trend and various
technologies will be reviewed and some tasks will
be presented for further advancement of PV
industry. 6. Background Education
