Talk about Searching
  • Keyword
  • Any word that appears in any field of an online

  • Search single words, phrases, and combinations of
    words or phrases
  • Powerful technique
  • Subject
  • Assigned using a controlled thesaurus
  • Official list of standard acceptable headings
  • Library of Congress
  • National Library of Medicine

6
Searching Tips
  • Use Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT
  • Limit search to specific title
  • And/or restrict the search to a particular date
    range
  • Stopwords commonly used words such as articles,
    pronouns and prepositions
  • Examples the, for and of
  • When searching strings that contain stopwords or
a Boolean operator, use quotation marks.

7
Using Boolean OperatorsFine Tuning Your Search
  • Overly general too many hits
  • Overly specific too few hits
  • AND, OR, NOT link search words together
  • Boolean Operators narrow or broaden a search
  • Help better express specific terms and retrieve
    the exact information quickly

8
The AND Operator
  • Narrows search
  • Linking key terms together defines the search and
    reduces the number of results
  • Example women and drugs

9
The AND Operator
  • Narrows search
  • Stringing key terms together defines the search
and reduces the number of results
  • Example high risk AND injury
  • Retrieves results that reference high risk
    injuries

10
Example search for women AND drug abuse
Quaratiello, Arlene Rodda. The College Students
Research Companion. New York Neal- Schumann,
1997. p. 22
Set 3
11
The OR Operator
  • Broadens search
  • Terms linked by the OR operator are searched
simultaneously and independent of each other
  • Example high risk AND injury OR trauma
  • Results either term or trauma

12
The NOT Operator
  • Narrows the search
  • Helps filter out specific topics you dont want
    as part of your search
  • Example high risk OR injury NOT trauma
  • Results contain high risk or injury but not
    trauma

13
Grouping Terms Using Parenthesis
  • Used to control search query
  • Without ( ) search executed from left to right
  • Words enclosed in ( ) are searched first
  • ( ) ALLOWS YOU TO CONTROL AND DEFINE THE WAY
    THE SEARCH IS EXECUTED
  • The left search terms in ( ) are searched first
  • Based on those results the second search strategy
    is searched

14
Results
  • Generalized Search heart OR lung AND blood or
    oxygen
  • Focused Search (heart OR lung) AND (blood or
    oxygen)
  • Generalized Search retrieves everything on heart
as well as references to the lung and blood and
    everything on oxygen
  • Focused Search only find articles about heart or
lung that refer to blood or oxygen
